I have recently inherited a dead computer from a friend. It stopped booting and he didn't feel like troubleshooting it, so he went out and bought a new Core 2 Duo system.

I had the time (and the spare parts) to pull things apart and play detective to determine what was broken. Turns out the motherboard is the problem.

So I have spare HDs, 1.5GB of DDR RAM, a Case, and an AMD Socket 939 3800+ CPU.

I'd like to replace the 2400+ Socket A system that is currently serving as my backend and give my Mythbox a little more horespower to work with. I'm currently using an AGP GeForce 5200 (If I recall correctly) and would like to continue using it as it's done the job so far and I want to minimize the amount of money i'm going to shell out with this upgrade.

Can anyone suggest a good Socket 939 board that is AGP and not PCI-E? I've been in a few of the shops around town (Winnipeg) and it seems like things are getting pretty slim for socket 939 boards these days, anything that is out there is PCI-E. I'd like to have the mobo be the only piece of hardware I need to purchase to get this off the ground (I don't have or want to buy a PCI-E graphics card).

If there isn't a good choice for Socket 939/AGP that is still being manufactured and can be found (I'm fine with ordering from online) is there a PCI-E based board that has onboard video that is suitable?

I am running a setup with a backend (that is occassionaly used as a frontend - but not very often) a Knoppmyth Frontend, and 2 Xbox frontends. On the backend I am running svideo out to my TV and just using a pair of PC speakers tapped into the PC onboard sound for my audio. I run a pair of PVR 150 cards, so I would need a solution that still offers me two PCI slots.

Any help would be appreciated, Something that's Tier1 is of course preferable, but I'm not opposed to a small amount of tinkering if need be to get things working.

There weren't a huge number of AGP 939 boards produced, as the introduction of 939 appeared about the same time as the introduction of PCI-E.

I think ebay might be your best bet here, I dropped 939 and AGP into an emay search and it came back with the ASUS A8V, an ASRock one that takes both AGP and PCI-E, and an Epox NF3.

Go for a nvidia board if you can, as they seem better supported than others.

Thanks for the suggestions.... I think I"m gonnna look at picking up anAsus A8N-VM CSM and just run with the onboard video. There seems to have been trouble with this board in the past, but it sounds like things run well on this now.
