I just added a third HD to the KM production box as a backup drive, and have been having the worst time with heat issues. With the WD5000KS in the HD cage along with the two ST3250823A drives things got downright toasty. The WD drive hit 51C (!) before I shut the machine down and pulled the power to it.
After getting some 3.5" -> 5.25" adapter rails, and remounting the new drive in a spare 5.25" bay, it has gradually crept back up to 40C and I'm not sure if it's done climbing. WTH?
I bought the drive on the strength of several reviews that said WD had gotten the cool & quiet thing right, and this drive was a well behaved system citizen, but at the moment I'm really wondering if these folks were reviewing cherry picked samples or just took a wad of cash to publish a rewarmed press release.
