Hi, Just quick qustion. My Dad has a really good myth setup, and i want to make my own(im only 16, dont live with him) Basically i have myth all setup and running(latest version, not sure the name), but with only 160gb... I have got myself 5x40gb ide drives, and 2 drive trays(think its called that) one in my tower, the other in the myth box, i want to be able to download and convert on my tower (using Kubuntu or Xp) and just put the videos on the drives and just take them out and mount in the mythbox. Say have a drive for kids movies, a drive for comedy, a drive for action, a drive for drama and a drive for other. Is this at all possible? How would i go about doing it? Thanks in advance, Nexxt |

It's probably possible...if I'm understanding what you want to achieve, you want to use hot-swappable drives in removable bays to take ripped movies from one system, where you'll do the ripping and transcoding, to another system, where you want to play them back. I think this is less of a Myth question than a Linux/Knoppix question, and it varies depending on what kind of hot-swapping cages you have, or if you don't have proper hot-swap equipment and want to cold-swap the drives. Really, you'll just need to configure the machine so that when you plug in the drive (cold or hot), it's mounted automatically to wherever you have Myth configured to look for saved videos. This is all done via the fstab, whether you are using special hot-swappable drive cages or just shutting down and putting the drives in and booting back up. http://www.tuxfiles.org/linuxhelp/fstab.html The question I can't answer for you is whether MythTV by default searches recursively through its directories for movies; i.e. if you mount your "Action Movies" drive to /myth/video/action/, but have Myth configured to look at /myth/videos/ for movies, whether it will see anything. I suspect it won't. But before you do anything, though, I'd try hard to decide whether all this is really necessary. If the computers are in the same house, it's going to probably be a lot easier to network them with GigE than to swap drives constantly. And even if they aren't, a 200GB IDE drive isn't all that expensive. I'd suggest saving your pennies, put your 5 40GB drives into a nice RAID-5 array somewhere, and put a fixed 200GB drive into the MythTV system with all the movies you want to watch on it. In the long run, I think that arrangement will be less hassle and cause fewer problems than moving drives around. |
