Post subject:  DLINK wireless lan (USB)
I would like to add wireless to my system but rather than go out and buy a Pci card I am considering a USB wireless adapter, such as the DLINK DWL-G122

Although I have plenty of Pci slots now, in the future I may upgrade my motherboard to micro-ATX and that only has two Pci slots, which would be used up by two tuner cards. My new MB would have lots of USB ports available.

Has anyone used the DWL-G122 with KM/MythTV, have you encountered any issues?

Good choice for Linux users!
This is a great choice on USB Wireless for Linux 2.6 users.

Installed driver, config'd with iwconfig, ran dhclient and success!

I was on the internet in a matter of 15 minutes. Most of that time was spent downloading and burning the drivers to disk on my other computer so I could get them on this machine.

I am running MythTV and this device allowed me to place my shuttle box in a very cramped place that had no chance of a physical network cable.

Wireless PCI was not an option as my box only has one PCI slot and that was used for my video capture card. USB Wireless seemed sketchy to me but thanks to open source projects, a solution was already engineered for me.

This is why Linux will prevail as the OS of choice. I am running a completely *legal* open source TiVo and not paying a dime for service. Does your TiVo have a 400Gb HD? Hardware like this DLINK worked right out of the box, therefore there is no reason not to get this if you were considering this for your Linux environment.

Reception is excellent and mine came with a nice cradle that keeps it away from the computer for clear reception.

Configuration was easy and seemless using the Linux tools built in to the OS. WEP works too. Any configuration windows could do, Linux could do as well.

I highly recommend this product. "

Post subject:  DWL-G122 how to setup so MythTv uses wireless port not eth0?
Ok, so the install of my Dlink DWL-G122 didn't go quite as planned :(

It turns out that there are different hardware revisions of the G122, not all use the same Ralink chip inside. My DWL-G122 is identified as ‘H/W Ver: C1, F/W Ver: 3.00’


When I boot up my machine it detects that it is a 'rt73' based device and goes looking for the firmware (binary file) but then fails because it does not exist on my machine (doesn't come with the R5E50 distribution it seems). Earlier hardware revisions of the G122 did not need this firmware file.

Anyway, I managed to track the firmware down and tried putting it in the /usr/lib/hotplug/firmware directory (just a wild guess) and it seems that it is now finding that binary and is loading the driver for both the rt73 and the rt2570

(the 2570 is the main driver for the Ralink chip in the G122 which comes from serialmonkey.com, and the rt73 refers to the firmware.)

Question is:

Since when I originally installed KM I only had my wired Ethernet connection I selected ‘eth0’.

How do I modify my system to use the Dlink-G122 instead? Is there a network configuration file which I need to edit or can I switch to my wireless connection from within MythTv setup somehow?
