Post subject:  is wifi even possible with knoppmyth?
seems like wifi will just not work, ive tried the new version and R5D1 I beleive and cannot for the life of me get my wmp54g to work, the problem generally lies in modprobe it seems.

Why havent linux distros integrated wifi card support yet?

Should I just go back to fedora (>.<) since I can get the wifi to work with it?

There's nothing wrong with wireless in R5D1 or R5E50. How easy it is to actually get working depends on the chipset. I have an atheros based card, and it worked out of the box in R5D1. In R5E50 the driver was missing so I had to go get and build it. In either case I was able to get wireless working reliably without too much trouble.

If there is no Linux support for your chipset, then ndiswrapper can be used with a Windows driver. I've never gone down that path, but search this archive and you should get some idea of how much work that is.

Since you didn't post much detail, this may not be news to you.

If you have an ethernet connection, you might want to try a simpler approach. I run wifi with no problem using an ethernet bridge.

Its not a problem of Linux, its the vendors not releasing code to Linux developers, so that wifi can work with Linux.

Seeing the card you are using, I can tell you that you can in fact use that card with Linux, but you must use the ndiswrapper with it, else it will not work properly. I also know, that this card has some limited support in mainstream distro's, with a generic Linux driver, but I have not impressed with this, since it won't kick up to 54Mbs, staying only at 11Mbs. By using the ndiswrapper I was able to get wifi running at 54Mbs with mainstream distros as well as with KnoppMyth.

I believe a lot of the Ethernet bridges are marketed as Wireless Game Adapters. My brother in law uses one to connect his Xbox 360 to his wireless network.

^^^^ Yep exactly. The only problem with them is that the two types that I use both require a Windows box to do the initial setup. But after that they work on any machine. To the device it just looks like a wired connection.

I do know the wireless/lan bridge things your talking about but im hoping to not spend any more money on this server

What exactly is wrong with modprobe, it can't find ndiswrapper, it doesn't like it? I had trouble using /etc/modules(sic?) when trying to get cpufreq running. I had to add explicit modprobe calls to /etc/rc.local to load those modules. Other modules seem to load fine from /etc/modules however.

I have just installed KnoppMyth as a test onto a PC with a wlan card, the card worked fine with the Windows drivers using Suse 10.1 so I thought that I would be able to get it working in another distro.

I ran ndiswrapper and loaded the driver and attached it to the hardware, no problems. When I come to modeprobe ndiswrapper i get 'FATAL: Module ndiswrapper not found'

From looking at a number of sites I have found that the module (.o or .ko) should be found in one of the folders, but it isn't. anywhere ('find |grep ndiswrapper') Does this mean that the ndiswrapper is not correctly installed into the kernel ??

Also I tried to download and install the most current version of ndiswrapper (1.35), but could not compile it from the shell as i got errors when running 'make'



Has anyone else had this issue ??

BTW, the versions installed are as follows (I have not changed or updated anything since I installed KnoppMyth from the CD)
ndiswrapper 1.1
KnoppMyth R5E50, Source code version 12360M
gcc version 4.1.2 20061115 (prerelease) (Debian 4.1.1-20)

It looks like everything works apart from the kernel module for ndiswrapper - help !

EDIT :
I have found a ndiswrapper topic that has resolved the problem of FATAL : ndiswrapper not found blah blah. Have a look in the main hardware category ;)
