Post subject:  No audio playing DVDs

Hello everyone,

I'm going to see where this gets me. I have been having trouble since my initial install of Knoppmyth to get the audio part of a DVD. I have trying playing a DVD through Knoppmyth (using mplayer I'm assuming) and using Xine, mplayer will atleast give me video, but neither will give me audio.

I am able to play MP3s as well as rip CDs through Knoppmyth and listen to the results. When I had it connected to my Directv I was able to hear audio as well.

I no longer have a spare Directv receiver right now I am looking to (try to) make my Knoppmyth a DVD jukbox and MP3 jukebox.

Last night I tried to rip one title from Devil Wears Prada (title 4 I believe) to see if a rip would work. Upon ripping and trying to play the ripped part, I didn't get good video - looked like a bunch of blocks with normal video every once in a while(could this be that it is an encrypted DVD?) and of course no audio. Am I supposed to have any other audio cables coming from the DVD player to the sound card? I just have the one audio cable connected right now.

I am using Digital out on my sound card.

I thought about upgrading to the latest Knoppmyth if anyone thought this would help.

As mentioned above, I am going to start from scratch on this to see if I can get any new ideas.

Thanks for any advice -

Mike

More info:

OK, I went to the wiki and found something about using the optical out with xine.

Quote:
How do I set up Myth plugins to use digital sound with xine?

As the mythtv user run xine. Open the Setup screen (alt+s or accessible with a mouse). Select the audio tab. Under speaker arrangement select Pass Through.

If this does not work open xine's Setup, on the gui tab change Configuration experience level to Master of the known universe and select Apply. Then select the audio tab and examine the device.alsa_passthrough_device setting.

I tried doing this and then tried to play a dvd again. This time I received an error -

Start Xine to play DVD,

It will show the Fox protected then it will try to start a preview.

The get:

The audio device is unavailable. Please verify if another program alredy use it.

Have you got an audio jumper from your DVD drive to your sound card or motherboard? This may only be needed for analog sound, but I always attach one to keep my options open...

Also, yes almost all commercial DVDs are encrypted using a weak encryption scheme called CSS which doesn't actually do anything to deter piracy (for example it doesn't prevent bit for bit copies such as a commercial DVD duplicator would make) it's purpose is mostly to inhibit what the US courts used to call the consumers "fair use rights". KnoppMyth, being a US based distro, does not (and can not due to the DMCA) support reading them out of the box. Folks whose governments haven't sold out to the media companies yet can use a certain unnamed library to decode these.

I just double checked, there is an audio cable going from the DVD player to the sound card. I did switch to the aux to make sure it wasn't the problem, still no go.
