Hi, I'm about to move to a new house and as it needs a rewire, I'm CAT5-ing the place which means splitting my boxen up to separate multiple frontends. The one in the kitchen is no problem - it doesn't need a remote as I want it mostly for surfing the net but also playing back those cookery programmes for recipes. However, my main frontend in the living room will need a discrete remote control. I've been reading about IR blasters / homebrew versions of etc... I'm currently using the remote and IR receiver from my Hauppauge Nova-T card. My current mobo is going to be used for the frontend - this is an Abit NF7-S board and it has an IR header socket upon it. Does anybody use an onboard IR header with a homebrew reciver? What I have in mind is something along wiring up a female mini jack socket and plug the current dongle into that. Then attach the wires to the VCC, Ground and either the IRTX or IRRX header. Would this negate the need for anything else? Oh, I've had a look at stuff on the internet about IR receivers- such as here: http://www.lirc.org/receivers.html I got a lot of hits for IR receivers, and there is a lot to wade through, so I thought I'd ask for some advice. I have the same question. I'm setting up a frontend in my garage and the mobo has a header for IR. I have some IR distribution hardware with some ir receivers designed to hook up to the 3 connections but don't really know how to enable it in linux. I "assume" it would be as easy as enabling it in the bios and then the OS sees it as it would on a laptop. But I'll be trying it in the next month or so. This reminds me of a quote I once heard. The only difference between theory and practice is lots and lots of practice. I think that may be the case for me on this one too. |

Yes, I was thinking along the same lines with the enable in bios, then the lirc *should* pick it up, assuming the correct modules are used in the hardware.conf. |
