I just recompiled and installed alsa 1.5 on my epia 10000 and R4V4. Analoge sound works like a charm, but I don't know how to get the spdif sound working so I can hook it up to my reciever. How do I go about doing this? Also, will using spdif allow me to hear the audio from analoge sources, primaraly TV? |

well I'm not sure how to get it working, but it should have no problem with sound from tv as you are not hearing/playing the sound directly from the card/cable/sat/etc. it is getting recorded into a sound file first then played back through the soundcard from that file in digital format. |

You can find the answers to your question at http://www3.sympatico.ca/howlettfamily/epia/epia_howto/x310.html#spdif or here which covers everything related to VIA EPIA hardware. Quote: To use S/PDIF with the ALSA modules, you must first execute the command amixer set 'IEC958 Playback AC97-SPSA' 0. This command does not set the volume - S/PDIF output is always at maximum volume. Instead, it sets the S/PDIF channel. The settings are: 0 - PCM1; 1 - PCM2, PCM1 (rear); 2 - Center and LFE; 3 PCM3, modem dedicated S/PDIF. The application must send its output to the S/PDIF device. For instance, to play PCM with mplayer using spdif, use the mplayer -ao alsa9:iec958 command; or to play AC3 use mplayer -ao alsa9:iec958 -ac hwac3.

Have you set the mobo jumper to S/PDIF? The RCA socket on the rear is switchable between S/PDIF & composite video by use of jumper "SPDIF_SEL". For S/PDIF it should be bridging the lower 2 pins when you look at the mobo with the backplane sockets on the left. |
