I have a VIA ME6000 motherboard which works beautifully with Knoppmyth and a PVR 350. However, I want to be able to use the ME6000's onboard video to play my SNES and NES emulators with OpenGL support.
Is there any somewhat easy way to enable OpenGL acceleration for my ME6000's CLE266 video? I'm not interested in MPEG2 decoding, just basic acceleration for things like games and maybe a DiVX or two that need to be stretched full screen.
Thanks!

that's nice and all, but If I remeber correctly it has been confirmed that those drivers will not install on a debian based system even if you try to force them.

Don't know whether hardware decoding of MPEG2 in debian is working or not but I am able to use the graphics drivers with kernel 2.6.6-epia1 or all other purposes. The kernel already has the necessary modules so I just copied the files which are need in /usr/X11R6/lib... directories and they are working fine. XFree86-4.3.x is loading them fine, no errors in XFree86.0.log file.

So all you had to do was download and compile the sources for the latest kernel, get the necessary XFree drivers, and you were set for things like OpenGL acceleration? (I don't need MPEG2 decoding.)
Or was it simpler or harder to accomplish?

well the biggest problem is that there are no sources. if you could get the source you could compile it for any kernel you want, but VIA isn't releasing the source just binaries that are precompiled for specific kernels like redhat and suse. got a custom kernel or debian tough you are SOL utill the open source devs reverse engineer everything. but you may be able to get opengl by just using the X binary, becuse debians X implimentation is fairly standard.

As an amendment to my original question...
I followed the directions from http://www3.sympatico.ca/howlettfamily/ ... _m10k.html (except that I downloaded a fresh 2.4.25 kernel, applied the v4l2 patch, applied the epia2 patch, and I forget if I applied anything else). Compiled and installed the kernel, and then followed what the web page above says. Zsnes was playing near perfectly in OpenGL mode (and looked amazing), DiVX movies were playing with 1% to 5% CPU load (which blew me away), and Myth was able to play shows pretty well (almost perfectly) except for occasional stutters (which I'm sure, if I dropped the resolution a little bit from the standard 480x480, would have gone away). All of this is on an ME6000, the bottom of the barrel of the EPIA line.
The only thing I couldn't get to work were DVDs with mplayer. They could not play fast enough.
I don't think these drivers enabled the MPEG2 decoding, but Myth was working pretty well without it... especially considering this is the lowest end of the EPIA line.
The only thing I wish I could get to work now is dual displays with the EPIA's video and my PVR 350. I was able to watch TV with the EPIA, but nothing tops the quality of the PVR 350. My on-board video is being saved for MythGame and MythVideo.

the 6000 doesn't have mpeg2 acceleration.

Yes, it does. There are a couple revisions with "6000" in the title, but this is the ME6000. It definitely has MPEG2 acceleration.
As a side note, I unchecked "Deinterlace playback" and now the stutters are gone. It's pegged at 100% CPU, but playback is working. Maybe I'll try getting the MPEG2 acceleration working someday soon, but as-is, this was just to see if it would work. MPEG2 acceleration is working just fine on my PVR 350.

wow I could have sworn only the 10000 and up had mpeg2, if there is a 6000 version with mpeg2 accel, and fanless design that would be very interesting.

You don't have to ask "if there is"... there IS, and many people own one!

The 600MHz model they list is the ME6000. Surprisingly, TV viewing works beautifully (albeit at 100% CPU) with the instructions above, so if one got the CLE266 working, this could be a wonderful machine.
I personally prefer watching TV with my PVR 350, and it's wonderful. No CPU load at all and a nice, fanless operation. In fact, my ME6000 serves as the frontend and backend for my MythTV set-up, and it is near flawless. (I just wish I could get dual displays workiing in X with the PVR 350 and the CLE266 video. That way, playing NES/SNES games and using MythVideo wouldn't be such a pain in the butt.)
The ME6000 also includes the 5.1 channel audio SPDIF output, which I can vouch for working beautifully.

So why haven't we seen a post in the Tier 2 forum with all the details?
