Glad to see your persistence paid off. What Version of the Realtek driver did you have installed? I see they just released 4.07b on 1/11/2008

Just in case anyone else finds this. My notes here say I tried the new drivers. After those didnt work I did a fresh install, and was able to get it working with the stock drivers.

This worked for me. I dont know why it didnt work out of the box. It seems that it installer did not detect the model=6stack-digout option correctly.

Code:

Enable IEC958/SPDIF Output

in /etc/modprobe.d/aliases add this line
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel

in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base add this line
options snd-hda-intel enable=1 index=0 model=6stack-digout

create /etc/init.d/spdif add these lines
amixer set IEC958 mute
aplay -Dplug:iec958 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/test.wav
amixer set IEC958 unmute

make the script executable
chmod +x /etc/init.d/spdif

to install the script
update-rc.d spdif defaults
reboot

to remove the script if you ever need to uninstall
rm /etc/init.d/spdif
update-rc.d spdif remove
