I'm thinking about replacing my aging IDE drive with a 1 Gb SATAII HDD, but my board will require a PCI SATAII controller since it's going on 5 years old. I'm wondering if any of your guys are also running a R5F27 box with a SATAI or II controller that works out-of-the-box?

Thanks for the suggestions.

I'm successfully using a simple Promise SATAII controller. No issues with installation or operation at all.
However, adding a second drive on port two made sda become sdb. No boot. OK, so putting the first drive on port four and the second on port three. Sda became sdb again.
 Go figure!

Cheers,
/Chris

Cool man, this is what I needed to know. Can you post a link to the exact promise card you're using?

Regrettably, I'm unable to find it where I usually buy stuff like this. The name of the card is Promise fasttrack TX4 or possibly SX4. This is a non-raid low profile model. The simplest four port card they had.
I have tried a raid model as well several years ago on a Mandriva system. It worked in standard mode, but their raid requires drivers that were unavailable for Linux in those days. Apparently, Promise has since decided to open up to open source. :)

Cheers,
/Chris

Someone else just asked that. I recently got an 8 port SATA card that worked right out of the box.

Thanks for the link, I actually read your post in the other thread, but you've got a PCI-E card whereas my machine uses an OLD mb that doesn't have PCI-E at all :)

Its actually PCI-X, and the card will still work in a normal PCI slot.
