Post subject: | unable to install to a sata hard drive |
I have a machine with a sata western digital 500gb drive on a via 8237 chipset and knoppmyth does not recognize the drive. Is there a way of inserting the correct mod or should i "try" a newer kernel, or some other trick I have not found yet? |

You're not providing a lot of detail to go on. - Check what the BIOS sees the drive as. If the BIOS doesn't see it then KM doesn't have a chance. - Do you have a PATA device (say an optical drive) that's showing up as /dev/hda and fooling the installer? - What type of drive? How is it jumpered? ... - What motherboard? Have you checked your BIOS settings? ... The answers you get are only as good as the question you ask. |

Two things to check though... Your BIOS should have a SATA mode setting. "Native" vs. "Legacy" although wording varies. The Legacy mode is more compatible in my experience. When installing Windows on a Dell box at work, I found that I either needed the driver floppy, or I needed to set this mode to "Legacy". You might try downloading a recent Knoppix CD/DVD and seeing whether it has a hard time with it in Native mode too. Cliff |
