I have had a homebrew LIRC working with my TV remote for some time now.

My original post was here

http://knoppmyth.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=18003&highlight=

The buttons on the VCR that I had setup to work with myth and Rewind, Fast Forward, Pause, etc. stopped working. I fell asleep on the couch the other day and when I woke up the batteries had fallen out of the remote. I noticed almost immediately after that the those buttons and ONLY those buttons had stopped working. Not really sure if the batteries falling out would have any effect on that functionality as it could have been something else and that I just didn't notice until the batteries fell out. But I wanted to post to see if I could get any replies before I went trying to re-record the buttons. any insight would be appreciated. thanks so much

Many remotes (especially universal ones) have a special key
sequence to tell it to emulate a different remote. It sounds
like yours was set up to emulate something and now it has
forgotten that.

Do you need to reenter the codes to get it to work with all
your hardeware? Like a VCR in addition to the TV or something?

nope. This is the remote that came with my TV and not a universal. No codes, the only thing it controls aside from the TV is the mythbox. Every button still works fine and I also notice that the pause button still works fine but the rest of the VCR buttons do not. The remote has 4 function or mode buttons. Cable, VCR, Aux, and TV. the only mode where the IRC reciever recognizes all the buttons on the remote is the Cable mode. So when I recorded all the buttons I just had to make sure the Cable mode was activate d on the remote. Also worth mentioning the Cable mode on the remote does not turn the TV off. The power button does not respond while in Cable mode so I have to go to the TV mode in order to get the power button to work to turn the TV off.

Here is a pic of my remote.

I still have not looked at any of my config files to see if anything got borked somehow. I just thought it was weird that after the batteries fell out I noticed right away my play, ff, and rew buttons no longer worked. Like I said it could have been something else prior to that and I just didn't notice until then.

Ok well I checked the config files and everything looked ok so I decided to try and rerun irrecord. It recognizes all the buttons but when I try to link the button to a name it says "Something went wrong."

This is what I get.

Code:
Suspicous data length: 31
No header found.
Found trail pulse: 589
No repeat code found.
Signals are space encoded.
Signal length is 15
Now enter the name for the buttons.

Please enter the name for the next button (press ENTER) to finish
rewind

Now hold down button "rewind".
Something went wrong.  Please try again. (9 retries left)

Really stumped over this one. Not sure why this quit working and why Ican't get it to work again. All I know is that up until a week or so ago I had the rewind and ff buttons on my remote working and now the reciever doesn't respond to those key presses. Anyone have any clues whatsoever please say something....i'm not sure what else I can do at this point, troubleshooting wise.

Here are my config files

I really think that you need to program that remote. Even remotes
that come with TV's have provisions for allowing it to control
e.g. a different brand of VCR. Those buttons are VCR buttons?

Try irrecord again and simply don't press any button at that point
(not on the first button recorded though?) and you will probably
get the same error.

So do you think any 4 digit VCR code would suffice? Because I didn't not have to program it when I got the TV or when I setup the IR reciever I'm confused as to what to program it to now. Thanks for your help thus far I appreciate it dearly and get back when you get a chance and let me know what you think.

As long as you are willing to go through the irrecord hassle,
probably any vcr code will do. I'd be interested to know whether
irrecord works after you program it with a vcr code.

I found that TV code 098 works best for me...most active buttons

What kind of remote do you have?

I have an RCA 4in1 (maybe 6-1)

TV 098 maps to RCA, Zenith, and sony TVs.

A few years back I bought a cheap RCA remote. it supports TV, cable, VCR and DVD functions. Problem was that for most code sets, not all of the buttons were active. For example, most TV's dont have "pause" feature, so for most TV codes, the <pause> key didnt send a signal.

I started by programmed the TV button to 001 and pressed all keys into irrecord or mode2 (cant remember...anything that will confirm a signal). many keys did not send signals...move on to 002....bla bla bla

098, for me sent a signal for every key. So leaving remote programed to tv 098, I built a config file for every key with irrecord.

You know I had a thought...

Most multi-function remotes have function buttons (TV, VCR, DVD, SAT,
etc) at the top. I wonder if maybe you just need to select the VCR
function to get those buttons to work.

I have tried that as well but unfortunately I lose more buttons on my remote than I want to. The channel buttons along with the VCR buttons still work but not much else.

You are right more buttons work in TV mode but the only mode where I was able to get ALL buttons working was the cable mode.

this seems to be my EXACT problem. So I'm guessing that with removal of the batteries whatever code may have been in there previously may have been erased? That is really the purpose of this post, to find out why it stopped working in the first place. Thank you all for your input I appreciate it very much. With the nice weather I havent been watching that much TV so I haven't messed with the knoppbox for awhile but I will have to try programming it for 098. I will keep you posted when I get around to it (probably this weekend) and thank you all again. You guys rock 8)

Perhaps there are codes available for your remote to work with "TV/VCR Combos". That should give you channel+/-, volume+/-, power, play/pause/rew/ff/stop/pause, channel #s, etc.

even better is a TV/DVD combo as they introduce arrow navigation buttons with select button as well.

food for thought. Though you would have to record all the buttons all over again.

Also note:

using the command:
#irw
should allow you to verify remote key presses to verify the lirc config is working for the play buttons, etc. if not, then either remote is broken, or try recording new codes.

if irw shows play buttons, etc being received properly, then you can verify the lirc config in /home/myth/.mythtv/... is configured to use those buttons for play/pause/etc.
