It would seem after getting optical out working (see here) that I have no sound playing DVDs, mythstream and possibly videos, though I haven't been able to verify that as I have none on the machine.
Any ideas?

On my upgrade to 5.5 I had this problem too. Don't know what changed but it started working after a reboot or two. Can't offer you anythihg other than that though.

It's using mplayer for everything but live TV and recording playback, so you need to set /etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf options:
Code: ac=hwac3,hwdts, #TWEAKER ao=alsa:device=plughw=0.1 #TWEAKER
Takes effect immediately.
Cheers

One other thing.
It seems on a reboot I lose the settings that I make with alsaconf so that it uses the av710 instead of the onboard sound.
How can I get these to persist?

Didn't seem to work. I'm pretty sure I'm not using mplayer, I checked the processes while playing a DVD and there was no mplayer. And I recall setting it to use the Internal player for DVDs.
Moved some cables around, and damnit, same problem I had with the last version. The sound playing DVDs isn't coming out the optical, it's coming out the "back sur" 3.5mm jack on the sound card, and it's all garbled/static.

I also use the Internal player for everything and I use coax SPDIF output which I would expect to be similar to optical in that they are both SPDIF type outputs.
I am sure you would have already tried this, but just in case... I had to run alsamixer to turn on the IEC98 device (SPDIF) and then use "alsactl store" (I think I had to run this as root) to save these settings so they would survive reboot. I am pretty sure that is all I had to do to get it to output audio to the SPDIF output using the internal player for ALL playing (DVD, Video, Music...).

Well, 'alsactl store' will help with one problem!
Wish I knew why the sound is going out the wrong output (and garbled) when playing DVDs.
I just did a quick test though, and when playing live tv the sound is perfect out both the spdif (optical) and the 3.5mm jack.
...curiouser and curiouser.
No sound playing with Xine either.

You *MUST* either disable onboard or remove the AV710. Linux assigns these devices as either 0 or 1 randomly. You'll never get consistency between reboots with two sound cards.

Good to know. I'll do that.
Any idea on how I get sound in DVDs? And apparently certain videos that are from DVD rips.
I'm using the Internal player for everything.

Use mplayer. Change the default video player command from Internal to "mplayer dvd:// -dvd-device %d -fs -zoom -vc mpeg12,ffmpeg12, -vo xv -vf pp=lb"
DVD plays with "mplayer dvd:// -dvd-device %d -fs -zoom -vc mpeg12, ffmpeg12, -vo xv -vf pp=lb"
Cheers

Exact same problem, video is fine, but there is no sound over the optical, and loud garbled static over the other output.
Doesn't seem to matter what player I use.

What make & model mobo are you using? I've had issues with both Abit and Asus mobos. Here are my settings that work for me:
In mythtv's audio setup screen:
Code: Audio Output Device: ALSA:spdif Passthrough Output Device: ALSA:iec958:{ AES0 0x02 } Max Audio Channels: Stereo
and check/enable the passthru options (AC3 & DTS) and append/change mplayer.conf to Code: ao=ALSA:device=spdif
Let us know how it goes.

Anything else and I don't get any sound even in live tv
I can say that sound works in tv, recordings, and 'most' videos. If it was a dvd rip it doesn't play.
Which is why I'm starting to think it's a decode/codec problem?

I had AC3 and DTS passthru checked this entire time. Then found a post where someone said they unchecked them, tried it, and it worked.
I have sound everywhere it seems. Don't think it's 5.1 ... but at least it's sound!
Now I at least have a fallback point when trying to get that working.
