I just installed R5.5. Everything went fine and is working well. My problem is that using Live TV, the sound volume is very low. I've got the volume turned up as much as possible both on the speakers and with aslamixer. It plays music properly(loudly), louder than the TV. So, I think that the problem is isolated to MythTV.

cat /proc/asound/pcm

00-01: VT1708 Digital : VT1708 Digital : playback 1
00-00: VT1708 Analog : VT1708 Analog : playback 1 : capture 2

Utilities->Setup->General
Audio Output: /dev/dsp
Passthrough Default
Max Audio Chanels: Stereo Upmix: Passive
Nothing else checked.

I've tried various combinations of settings, this is the one that works. I've played around with the use internal volume controls. They seem to match alsamixer. The only choices for Mixer device are /dev/mixer and ALSA:default. /dev/mixer doesn't seem to work.

I would appreciate any help, advice and suggestions.

Thanks
Jack

What are you sending you audio output to?
What are you using to control your audio volume right now?
Are your recorded programs volume ok?
If go into alsamixer and use the tab button how are your capture settings set up?

Audio is set to default. So, reading the screen it says that default is the same device that's used by MythTV. So, I guess that's ALSA. The recorded programs have the same volume. as Live TV.

You got to help us out here and post what you tried or observed or send tjc and me a plane ticket. Did you try to set the volume at 100% to see if it affects your problem.

Start watching a recording and open a Xterm window (Alt+x) and start alsamixer to check with instant feedback. To save your settings "alsactl store" as SU. Use "Exc" to exit alsamixer. press (Ctrl+d) a couple of times to close the xterm window>

All of my Alsa settings are at 100% in my Myth Box that I use to output 2 channel Stereo to my TV. That is what it takes to get 1 volt peak-to-peak signal. That is normal on every motherboard that I have used. How else would you know where 1Volt p/p setting is? I adjust the analog capture volume to match the level of the ATSC recordings so all recordings are at the same levels.

Have you looked for any other sound cards that capture cards may create on install?
Alsamixer –c0 sound card
Alsamixer –c1 capture card #1
Alsamixer –c2 capture card #2

Did you go to Mythtv Menu>>Utilities / Setup>> Setup>>TV Settings>>Recording Profiles>> and look under your card type? sometime capture cards have volume settings there.

What capture card are you using? do you have more than one card?

As TVBox says it's hard enough to diagnose stuff like this remotely even with somebody who is providing detailed feedback. At this point a lot of questions are short, but the answers need to be as detailed as you can make them, and you need to do your own research and legwork.

What do the logfiles say about audio/sound? Especially the frontend log in "/var/log/mythtv/mythfrontend.log"?

There are also multiple places that the audio volume needs to be set, at least one of them on the capture side. Have you made sure that your recording profile volume is turned up? I don't recommend 100% since that can lead to distortion and clipping, but you have realize that the effects are multiplicative, and 0.70 * 0.70 * 0.70 == 34% which is probably not what you intended.. Master volume is just that, and modifies PCM and other output sources, add that on top of a recording with low volume levels, and ... Using 90% across the board will double your volume. (The default volume settings are conservation to avoid blowing speakers and eardrums.)

I have one capture card it's a Hauppage PVR-150.

I've tried all of the aslamixer -c0 through -c2. Only -c0 works.

All of the settings are at 100%. That includes Master, PCM, Front, Front Mic, Line, Mic,and Capture. I've tabbed to the 2nd screen and increased all of the settings there.

Entries in /var/log/mythtv/mythtvfrontend.log:
2008-07-19 08:29:38.614 Opening audio device 'default'. ch 2(2) sr 48000
2008-07-19 08:29:38.614 Opening ALSA audio device 'default'.
2008-07-19 08:29:38.701 Mixer unable to find control Master
2008-07-19 08:29:38.701 Mixer unable to find control Master
2008-07-19 08:29:38.702 mixer set channel 0 err -1: Operation not permitted
2008-07-19 08:29:38.702 mixer set channel 1 err -1: Operation not permitted

Finally, I went into Mythtv Menu>>Utilities / Setup>> Setup>>TV Settings>>Recording Profiles and set the recording volume to 100%.

After changing everything to 100%, It a little louder, there's hissing on the speakers. However, playing musing is still much louder than live tv.

Thanks
Jack

I swear... Managing this forum can be so depressing... How in the world does this fall under hints and tips?

Clearly the poster is looking for a "hint" or a "tip" to fix his problem!

"Problems and Solutions" would seem to be the place to post it.. although the description says "If you had a problem please describe it and how you solved it. This will help us improve future releases. This is NOT where you post if you are having a problem." and that section is closed off to all but the moderators. So it's at least a little confusing!

I am experiencing a very similar problem - low audio using Hauppauge PVR-150. I see the post that suggests this is the wrong place for this discussion, so may I suggest going over to the thread:

http://knoppmyth.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.p ... highlight=

I have checked all volume settings set to max and unmuted and have the audio working but the level is very low.
