Well it has been years since I had a problem requiring me to post.

I have a front end 5.5 box and a back end 5.5 box. Everything on the backend box is fine. Everything on the front end is also fin but for one thing. Everything is black and white. I have an old nvida 6600 outputting via svido to 15 in tv. For the last few versions I have never had a color problem. But I jumped from an older version to 5.5 and now everything after and including the nvida splash screen is black and white. Everything before it including the splash loading screen is in color.

This is my xorg.conf

I thought this problem was only experienced outside N. America (specifically Europe), but you used U.S. spelling so thhe problem could be more general.
Here is the bit you're looking for:

        Device     "card0"
        Monitor    "Monitor0"
        Option     "TVOutFormat" "SVIDEO"
        Option    "TVStandard" "PAL-B"

Obviously the TVStandard is what you may need to change. If you're in the U.S. it'll need to be a variety of NTSC.

Mike

I live in Canada so yes NTSC is me. I will change and see what happens. I wonder where in my setup it determined I was not North American?

Thanks

I thought this problem was only experienced outside N. America (specifically Europe), but you used U.S. spelling so thhe problem could be more general.
Here is the bit you're looking for:

Code:
Section "Screen"
        Identifier "Screen0"
        Device     "card0"
        Monitor    "Monitor0"
        Option     "TVOutFormat" "SVIDEO"

Well, aside from placing it in the wrong section, there doesn't seem to be too much wrong., but I didn't check the hundreds of lines. Please don't post every line, just what's relevant.
You should try again by looking at what I posted before and putting the options in the right place. You should then restart X by using Ctrl-alt-backspace.

I believe there's a xorg.conf that comes with knoppmyth called "nvidia tvout sample" or something like that in the same dir as xorg.conf. You could try to see if that works. At least then you'd know it was your xorg.conf and not something else.

I doubt this is required here. He hasn't done what I suggested yet, and I believe it will fix the problem. It has many times previously for me. It's either the xorg.conf or the T.V. and I think the latter has already been ruled out as it was working before.

To use that file you should rename the existing one, rename the sample (xorg.conf.nvidia.tv.out.sample) to xorg.conf then restart the X server, not just move it into the directory (which is where it already is, incidentally). The file also has the settings in the monitor section, and has the TVStandard NTSC-M (instead of where I have PAL-B).

Try it, try it, you will see :-)

I assume this problem has been fixed but another hint for people searching for video black and white is that if the s-video connector is not all the way in it can output just black and white.
