Post subject:  Video Stutters Every 5 Minutes

Hi does anyone know what is causing this problem and how to fix it? The video “stutters” every 5 minutes for about 15 seconds in playback and live tv. If you pause and go back and replay the part of the video where you got the “stutter” it is fine, so it was not recorded that way. Since it happens every 5 minutes I looked for cron jobs that may be happening every 5 minutes but could not find any (as a matter of fact running crontab –l for both root and mythtv user found no cron jobs). I tried different playback profiles, Slim, Normal, CPU++ with no change.

Here’s some additional information on my setup:
Frontend Dell GX270
Built-in Video: Intel 82865G (tried i810 and intel drivers)
Memory: 1Gbyte
Removed SQL and backend

Backend eMachine T2893
Both running Knoppmyth 5.5 (mythtv .21)
Hauppauge PVR-150

They are connect through a wired 100 mbps full duplex LAN

Hi,

RRD tool gathers operating statistics (temperature, cpu load etc) about the system. This is run every 5 minutes as a cron job. I think the main culprit is motherboard temperature.

Hope this points you in the right direction.

Yup, ive had this problem on an old box, and to confirm it you should disable RRD, and go a session to make sure it is the problem.

I think rrd_Configure.pl is the script, and just disable it when it asks if you want to enable it.

If that sorts the problem, then it could be just one of the sensors (that RRD uses to generate the graphs) that is causing the problem. For me it was the cpu temp, and i had to "finetune" the rrd config files to acquire the temperature more efficiently.

I'm sure a search will turn up the details on this forum.

Hope that help,

Nathan

Please see, the R5.5 Hints, Known Issue # 4.1. If you haven't read the hints yet it's highly recommended.

Thanks for the suggestion. I disabled rrd but I still get the stuttering. I only did that on the frontend machine. I'll try disabling rrd on the backend too to see if that does it.

Thanks for your help. It was rrd on the backend machine.
