Just made a plunge on a 50 inch plasma Hitachi 1080p, now I am looking for info on what I need to do setup wise to get it to work with my current video card.

Could not find anyone with the same tv, but I am seeing some conflicting info on what is required for nvidia setups now, are the detailed modelines still needed?

I am using a geforce 6200 right now too with a dvi output that I plan to use.

Thanks guys!

It's my understanding that if you are using the Nvidia drivers, you don't need to mess with modelines. You just have to add a few lines to xorg.conf and specify the type of output you want (1080i, 1080p, 720p). Check other posts for the details... sounds like you've seen some of them.

I'm not sure your system and/or a GeForce 6300 can handle 1920x1080p... you might want to start at 720p or 1080i and get things working, then try 1080p.

I don't have any direct experience with this, but maybe this page will help?

Yow, that's crying out for a TinyURL. :)

I'm referring to:

Your right, that url screwed up the formatting of the entire thread!

Although my link alluded to the same thing, you links were much more succinct with concrete examples! Thanks.

See the following thread:

I had similar questions regarding a Panasonic Plasma TV. Works great for me now using the nVidia 1280x720_60 mode.

General question about this, I temporarily hooked up my svideo to my tv. Things are a bit fuzzy even after upping the bitrate. Will the dvi to hdmi setup help things any?

Thanks.

Absolutely. S-video cannot carry an HD signal. Only component, VGA, DVI, or HDMI can do HD. You only want to use S-video, composite or (ack) RF connections if you have no other choice.

Clarification, even fir my previously recorded SD shows? I have quite a few to catch up on before getting to new recordings.

Well, I find that analog recordings played back to my TV over DVI->HDMI look at least as good as the analog channels do played back on my TV via my cable set-top box... namely, not all that hot.

Analog channels have never looked very good when played back on HDTVs... I remember getting an incredible sinking feeling when I got my first HDTV and saw how awful analog looked compared to my old tube TV.

Solution to that problem is to avoid watching analog channels. :)
