I replaced a bad SATA drive with an older IDE on my SBE. BIOS sees IDE as Master1, but R6 installed as a SATA drive. Is there an easy way to turn sdx into hdx?

R6?

It uses the default hard disk drivers for modern kernels which use SCSI emulation an thus "sd[a-h]" names for everything. This same issue came up in the R5.5 dev cycle and Cecil ended up configuring in the old style IDE drivers to defer the pain, but it's time to bite the bullet.

Frankly most current Linux distros I've seen are already there. Fedora, Ubuntu, ... etc. all show IDE drives as sd-whatever.

yeah R6. So I should just let it be? seems to work otherwise, so... I guess I can live with it.
