Post subject:  Which hardware?

I've tried knoppmyth before and didn't have the best hardware for it.

I would like to setup a back end to record HD cable. Before I buy anything I wanted to ask what to get? AND how the setup would go?

What kind of video capture cards will just work? (i've been reading mythtv wiki and it's overwelming)

Do I need a cable box for each card? (is this the best setup?)

What kind of network speed do I need between the front end for seamless playback?

Which remote will just work?

Does anyone have a system like this and what is working for them? and how is it setup?

Thanks for your help

Most modern stuff will work fine. See the atmoic ant post for a low power solution that will work out of the box (search on atomic ant)

Most any hauppauge stuff just works. I only do analog SDTV cable so I can't speak from experience

I think the answer is yes.

If you're talking about wired vs wireless, I have a gigalan setup. Speeds between boxes are on the order of 20-30 MB/s and I never had a problem. I don't think you can go wrong with wired gigalan. Maybe someone else will write in about wireless.

Many options here. Streamzap remote is one that just works. $30 from amazon.

See my sig but bewared, this is OLD hardware. Again, a MBE for HD that's cheap and uses low power and is detailed in these forms is atomic ant.

For digital cable, you'll be connecting the output of your digitalbox to the input of whatever capture device you end-up purchasing. You'll also need an IR blaster, firewire, or serial cable to manage the channel changing. Which one depends on which cablebox you have.

Yeah, one that'll do HD. You gotta start using the wikis and google for some of your questions or else people might not take the time as I have to answer them for you.

Others may yet reply with some specifics, but in general, the community doesn't like to answer posts containing general requests. There is a feeling that there should be some research on the poster's part. That said, we were all Linux newbies at some point too so there is a balance. Anyway, check out those links I provided and also check out the Teir 1 forum here for some hardware suggestions as well as the dtv section.
