Post subject:  My Mythbox motherboard has died, I have questions on new HW

Hi all,

I went through a lot of pain because I was too much on the bleeding edge when I bought my NVidia 6150 based motherboard because I thought it would be a good low power HTPC base many years ago. Now the motherboard died and the on-board video doesn't work. If I plug in a 6200 PCI-X card the system works for about 45 minutes but then must still get too hot and it starts crashing.

So, I was thinking about basing my new system on Intel Atom. However, I have a complication. #1 my TV only has component input. #2 my tuner is a HD5000 PCI card.

First, would my 6200 PCI-X card and Atom 330 have enough horsepower for 1080i? If not, I was thinking about buying the Asus NVidia ION board which has a PCI slot. Then I would need to buy a RGB->Component converter. Has anyone used the HDFury converter?

Thanks for any help,
Rick Wirch

My card came with a component fan-out that plugged into the s-video connector. It technically isn't an s-video because it has those extra pins in it. Check your card to see if the s-video port has more than 4 pins. If it does there might be an adapter to fit your card. This video card has the cable that mine has look at the last picture http://www.newegg.com/product/product.a ... 6814102880

I just got an ASUS Atom a month ago and am extremely happy with it. I'm not sure how big the HD5000 is, but be careful as the PCI slot is pretty tight.

You might have a problem with component though. I'm not sure how HD would look after VGA->Component conversion. I'm using HDMI and the picture is brilliant. Noticeably better than when I use the VGA connection at the same resolution (IMHO).

My 8400 has the s-video like port that a component adapter plugs into and and 1080i works fine (except for my TVs annoying overscan problem at that resolution).
I think your 6200 is not supported for off-loading the video decoding and the Atom is not powerful enough by itself to do 1080 video. The Ion board should work fine and may come with the adapter you need for component cables.
