so... I recently picked up a free motherboard combo off a doorstep (love free useful stuff)

so now, I basically have two similar 900mhz duron setups that I plan on using for myth front ends which can be overclocked to 1200MHZ (one would need a better heatsink so I would prefer to avoid this)

here are my questions... what are my options for a composite output MPEG decoder that's myth compatible? Do I even need one (is the processor powerful enough)? could I just used a TV out on any old video card? I have a Geforce 2 GTS with tv out... would this work for one? how?

I'm sure more questions will form as this project moves along

If you can find a Nvidia 8400 or better that will fit in a PCI slot (not PCI express) then you could use VDPAU so the graphics card will render the output and reduce the load on the cpu. Then you should have little playback problems with that ancient hardware.

so I hooked up a cdrom and loaded he front end, it seems to run okay over the prosavage built in video but the video chugs and is slightly pixelated

any reason why it wouldn't run at full frame rate?
bad video card?

I'll try my nvidia geforce 2 GTS next to see if the 15 pin output runs smoother, then try and figure out the composite output

this looks encouraging

so I went ahead and did a front end install to the hard drive as stated on wiki page

http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php? ... nlyInstall

(for my notes) and now it all runs good EXCEPT whe I go to play a show the front end crashes and gives me an error like

invalid CTL / dev/mixer
Mixer attach error
check mixer name in setup 'dev/mixer'

I'm just trying to get the onboard sound working and whats odd is it worked great from the CD

I'll be fiddling with composite output whil I await an answer

I'll give another vote for the Nvidia 8400. I have a card I dropped into a low power FE and BANG, all of a sudden it's pushing 1080i without hardly a tick on the CPU. Really eye opening!

Obviously the issue is with your onboard sound chip. Perhaps if you post the brand and model of your motherboard we can figure out which audio chip it uses and provide some constructive feedback.

hey I like when people call me a moron in a positive manner

it's a gigabyte GA72MM rev1.2 I THINK

remember this was a salvaged computer from someones trash

*edit 1*

Quote:
This is a Gigabyte
GA-72MM Rev 1.2 with a 750MHz Socket A CPU. It has the VIA chipsets,
and the only one I can ID (the other is hid under a heatsink) is VIA
VT82C686B. There is a Creative chip for the audio, but I can't read
the numbers on it.

*edit 2*

it seems info for this board is hard to find. plan B will be to disable onboard sound and use an ensonique card (I have a few of these)

swaped in an ensonique card and disabled the onboard sound in the bios.

SAME ERRORS

can anyone tell me where this error is pointing and what file I need to fix? I can guess at the drivers

If you can't read the chips you might be able to get better info from the kernels boot time hardware detection. This is what the dmesg logs and utility are great for.
Code:
dmesg | more

The lspci utility is also really good at helping to identify all the hardware in your system.
Code:
lspci -v -nn | more

how do I set the device in the alsa mixer? I might have to figure out the device ID or whatever (like how you can have video0 video1 etc.)
