Hi!

I have two problems that seem to have to do with a not recognized nForce2 chipset:

This results probably in two problems I have
1) No DMA

$ hdparm -d1 /dev/hda gives me

Code:
setting using_dma to 1 (on)
 HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Operation not permitted
 using_dma    =  0 (off)


I have tried every other parameters I found on the net, no joy.

The nForce2 chipset IS supposed to be supported by the 2.4.2x kernel! So what can I do about it?

General note - when you're looking for help with a hardware problem it helps to provide details of the HARDWARE!

What mother board?
What revision of that motherboard?
Is the BIOS uptodate?

We've got a lot of folks using dozens of different nforce2 motherboards around here (check out the tier 1 and tier 2 topics) and I've never heard of a problem like this.

Hi tjc,

I have a shuttle SN41G2V3, there have not been any BIOS updates released yet.
Brand new hardware sucks ...

That's why it's called "the bleeding edge". ;-)

Have you checked out the nvidia/nforce forums? I got a lot of good information there when I first got my SN41G2 and had a BIOS problem. Try sfftech.com and www.nvnews.net for starters. It sounds like they made mobo changes which aren't supported by the current kernel and drivers. You may also want to get the very latest Linux drivers from Nvidia. Heck, the V3 isn't even listed on Shttle's US or global site... The only place I found any mention of it is at a few German sites...

I'm still waiting on some info from nvnews.net. Haven't heard about sfftech.com though. I joined, asked and am waiting!

Ok, the problem is the the new southbridge on the board - MCP-S with native S-ATA support instead of the MCP-T southbridge in the version 2 shuttles.

So now I only need to find out which kernel supports this southbridge!

Is there a common way of finding this out?

That sounds kinda promising!
Would patching the kernel to a stable 2.4.26 version also imply the need to recompile a bunch of modules?

yes any time you change kernels you will have to recompile at least the ivtv, and lirc stuff.

There is no way around recompiling. I hope I'm not breaking too much.

Btw: Is there a reason I cannot find any ix86 kernel-patch packages for debian?
