Post subject:  KnoppMyth on Dell PowerEdge 400SC

Hi,

I am a complete newbie.
I would like to install KnoppMyth on this spare PC.

Dell PowerEdge 400SC
2.4GHz/128K Cache, 400FSB, Celeron
256MB DDR, ECC, 400MHz, 2X128MB, PowerEdge 400SC
40GB, 1 inch IDE Hard Drive
3.5 in, 1.44MB, Integrated Floppy Drive
Logitech PS/2 2-button Mouse
Keyboard,104 Key,US
On-Board NIC
48X,CDROM,680M I Half Height
Integrated Audio

I realize that:
a. I need to get a TV Tuner card.
b. My 40GB hard disk is small.
c. I need a monitor.

Questions:
Is anyone using KnoppMyth on this kind of a Dell box?
What can I do with a 40GB hard disk?
What can I not do with a 40GB hard disk?
Will the integrated audio work?

Thanks.

1. Search the forum.
2. You can record shows, of course not as much as you would with a 80 gig drive.
3. See 2
4. Boot off the CD, it will (hopfully) detect your audio card. NOTE:There is an issue w/ some SB Live in some Dell system (search the forum).

Ok, thanks.

I have a spare 60GB drive.
If I add that to the Dell box, will KnoppMyth
automatically make that part of the system or
do I have to do some tweaking?

How will the total 100GB appear?
As a single volume?

Hello, I am new here. :D (first post!)

Just make sure you get a good burn of the CD. I wasted 4 hours because I didn't do the cd test thingy.

You will have to partition/format the drives yourself if you want to use the second hd. If you want it to and what's left of your 40GB drive to look like one drive you need to setup LVM (Logical Volume Manager). It's in the docs and doesn't appear to be too hard. just bear in mind that you will lose all your data if you ever need to shrink the volume.

I have a Dell 400SC as well:
2.8GHz HT
2GB PC3200 (overkill, I know... but it's what I have!)
160GB Samsung HD
300GB Maxtor HD
nVidia 5200 with TV-out
PVR-150 w/ Silver remote
Lite-on DVD-RW
Logitech Wireless Desktop w/ USB reciever (the cheap one from Wal-Mart)

I installed KM R5D1 last night. I had a few issues that were related to me, not KM. All the hardware was detected and installed fine. Even the wireless keyboard/mouse. The remote worked out of the box. I have an issue with sound during live TV and my X display to the TV. I don't expect it to be a problem that I can't get around. I will post more this weekend.

I have been messing with Linux for many years, never an expert but ok with it. It had been so long since I did anything that I couldn't remember how to do a directory listing! LOL

Anyways, good work with KnoppMyth! It looks like a very slick package, much nicer than GB-PVR that I had used in the past. :D
