OK, this is with R4V5 with a Shuttle system I'm trying to use as a remote frontend. When I put in a DVD, it doesn't automatically jump to the Play DVD menu like I think it's supposed to. More importantly, when I hit the Play DVD button, it just blinks and does nothing, it stays on the MythTV menu.

Starting up mythfrontend manually gives me what you find below, including "couldn't open DVD device: /dev/dvd"

Searched for "open AND /dev/dvd" and found this thread:

http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic. ... en+dev+dvd

I did a "ls -l /dev/dvd" and it didn't point to hdc, it pointed to something completely different. I then removed the link and made a new one to /dev/hdc, ls -l reports that it's pointing to the right thing, but it still gives the same "couldn't open DVD device" error as in the above thread.

What now? Thanks.

Let me geuss, /dev/dvd was either a link to, or a link that pointed the same place as, /dev/cdrom and the ultimate destination was /dev/scd0 or something like that. This is a valid configuration using the IDE SCSI emulation for controlling CD/DVD drives.

Generally what you need to do is fix permissions, ownership and group membership of the real device. Search for a recent thread where I talk about /dev/scd0 for more details.

Oh what the hell, I'm in a generous mood and just waiting for someone to get me patch here anyway. This is the thread in question:

Thank you for your compassion. I read the thread, set the symlink to point back to scd0 instead of hdc, changed the group from something it was set to (don't remember what it was) to cdrom, and restarted, and I'm back to playing DVDs. Thanks.

(I'm a little concerned about why it had been set to this, as I sure know I didn't do it, but oh well...)
