Post subject:  Can I dual boot this on my Windows MCE box? (HP 873n)

I'm running Windows Media Center on an HP 873n - one of the first MCE boxes.

I'm getting tired of it slowing to a crawl and needing to be rebooted every day or two... and of it not recording a series I've programmed properly and set to the very highest priority (what DID Eleanor Clift say on the McLaughlin Group tonight? I missed it!).. and the windows security concerns in general...

I'd rather dual boot on this box rather than build a whole new one - and deal with a KVM switch. Is this possible? Think my configuration will work? It has an Emuzed maui TV tuner and an NVIDIA graphics adaptor.

Thanks

Hello

In regards to your question about Dual Booting. There have been posts on the board covering this topic. Do a search and you will find out if any of them are using Media Center. As far as Emuzed Maui TV Tuner Card I'm pretty sure that it is not supported by Linux/MythTV...

Hope that helps

Cool - thanks.

I've searched and haven't found any other posts on people converting their windows media centers to mythtv - perhaps it's a strange thing to do.

I think both OS's will support a Hauppauge 250/350 tuner, so I'll need to switch tuners.

The no-dual-boot problem is related to the KnoppMyth distribution in particular, not MythTV in general, I'm assuming.

So I guess I have to do this the hard way, pick some distribution (Red Hat, Debian, Mandrake? I guess I shut my eyes and pick one?) and install MythTV on top of it. (rolling up sleeves, trying to remember unix from all those years ago)

Thanks for your help!

Yes, KnoppMyth is deliberately not a general purpose distro. It is intended to make it as easy as possible to set up a dedicated "set top box" with as little extraneous cruft as possible. As a result anything which doesn't contribute to the goal of setting up, running, and maintaining a PVR has been left out. It's intended to let you create and control what is essentially an appliance. When was the last time you dual booted your VCR?

I'd probably recommend following Jarod's Guide which is based on Red Hat FC1 or FC2.
