Post subject:  Digital Audio Hardware Question

Greetings,

My Creative Labs Audigy card (supposedly supported by ALSA) has a mini-jack digital out. Does anyone know if I can use just a regular mini-jack (male) to RCA (female) or is there some "special" jack or "special" wire that I am required to purchase?

It requires a mono 3.5mm jack plug. I created a cable by taking a standard 75ohm coax cable which had two RCA plugs, cut one off and attached the mono jack plug.
I believe there are adapters available for it, but they may be hard to find.

I have a soundblaster live and I use a standard stereo y-cable. I connect black (left channel) to my reciever and leave red hanging. Y a y-cable you ask? I've had trouble locating a mono mini-jack to RCA and I have better things to do then wire a cable. Like actually watch stuff on my myth boxen.

Thanks benjohnson and willem. I did find a mono to rca cable. So all I have to do is run the wire (I am going to use a component video cable that I test for digital coax with my dvd player) and download the correct ALSA driver.

I have yet to download anything onto the myth box. I know I need to download the new nvidia driver to improve my video. Do I just download the correct driver from the ALSA website?

Thanks again guys,

Michael

One note on ALSA: I had many problems getting AC3 passthrough (feed the AC3 stream from DivX/XviD content directly to my receiver) working with in mplayer and ALSA 1.0.6 (emu10k1 - SB Live! 1024). Downgrading ALSA to 1.0.5 solved this problem. From the 1.0.6 release notes it appears a rewrite is done for AC3 support.
Having analog audio routed through the digital out (=less spaghetti) worked equally well for all ALSA versions tried.
