I'm having a few problems one of which is a sound issue, I cannot get the sound card to play anything and yes, before you berate me, I have searched the forums and nothing seems to be very helpful. The only remotely helpful bit of info was a link to the ALSA page where the guy explains a couple things. I'm not looking for a step by step (although that would be nice) how-to on how to get this sound card working but if anyone can point me in the right direction as to where I should start. Here's what I've done so far: I've tried to run: modprobe snd-es18xx insmod snd-es18xx and also tried to edit: /etc/modules (there is no modules.conf) and add snd-es18xx to the bottom of the list. None of these seem to work, modprobe and insmod both give me ' modprobe: Can't locate module snd-es18xx AND insmod: snd-es18xx: no module by that name found' errors. I got this module name off the ALSA website. And the reason I'm trying to get this card working is because within MythTV it's coming up with errors such as: "MythMusic has encountered the following error: AudioOutput: timed-out opening /dev/dsp" and other errors similar to that. What should be the next logical step to get this card working? Here's my specs: Compaq Professional Workstation AP400 WinTV PVR-250 ATI Rage Pro Onboard ESS 1869 Sound Card |

How does 'perhaps a search of forum' equate to being berated? Months ago, someone had issue w/ a Compaq and it's builtin sound card. The card just wouldn't work. If i remember correctly, the person just add a PCI soundcard. /etc/init.d/alsa-autoconfig doesn't work? |

I had gentoo on this machine previously and I did manage to get the sound card working but I can't remember how I did it. I tried the alsa-autoconfig after doing a bit more searching and it seemed to do something as it never came back with an error message so I quickly did a modprobe snd-es18xx and an update-modules and now when running lsmod it shows the module name but the sound still isn't working (previously modprobe was throwing up errors) . Anything else I can look into? |

You don't need to modprobe after alsa-autoconfig. |

Sounds good, ... if it actually worked ![]() When trying to listen to music I get the same error message: "MythMusic has encountered the following error: AudioOutput: timed-out opening /dev/dsp" Is there a way to test sound output from the commandline? |

I've had luck getting my ESS 1869 working. I'm using a Compaq SFF as a front-end box. I used the information I found here: http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php?page=es18xx Good luck! |
