has anyone ever gotten this to work with the usb 2 version or even the usb 1 version of the external pvr?

Not that I know of, but these links I found recently when googling were intriguing:

I'll be checking these out when I replace my one-tuner (PVR-350) shuttle
box with a 4 tuner server.
