| Post subject: | Chaintech 7NIF2 |
The Chaintech 7NIF2 comes with a Embedded TV Enocder supporting STSC/PAL TV. So if my system has a WinTV-PVR 350 I should be able to watch TV and record at the same time correct? I have found on the forum where it says you need 2 encoders to do this so am I correct in thinking the WinTV-PVR 350 and the 7NIF2 Embdded ones will do this when used together? Also I am unable to view channel higher then 99, what is this about

As far as I'm aware, the Chaintech doesn't have an TV tuner. You cannot record and watch w/o 2 tuners.[/list] |

Ok so what it says Enbedded TV encoder, that is differant then a TV Tuner. Any idea what an embdded TV Encoder is? ALso I am unable to view channel higher then 99, I read something about tuner types for the 350 but nothing really concrete. 7NIF2 Thanks for the info! |

It may refer to the fact that is has built in TV out and it will encode to NTSC or PAL depending on BIOS settings.... Just a thought. I'd have given you and answer on the 350 if I'd thought of one. There are many posts on the frum about the 350. You can also search the MythTV docs, MythTV archives and IvyTV as well. |

It appears I misunderstood this system a bit. It appears that my stations above 99 are encoded by Time Warner so I need to use my Explorer 800 Cable Box as my tuner. Doh! I was hopinh to have a complete separate box, but it would seem the encoded of these higher channels will prevent that. |

Because I am a n00b I will answer this in n00b terms for you.. I use that chaintech MoBo the MoBo has a TV out .. that is all the TV encoder is. Now, you MIGHT have the potential to watch two shows at the same time with two TV encoders, as long as at least one of them is pre-recorded, one is live from the 350 tuner, and your system can handle the load. As far as the tuner only going to 99 is a function of the card, my 250 will only go to 125. Anything above that is "Digital" and as of right now you need a cable box to get the higher channels. Maybe your cable company pushed that "digital" barrier down to 100 to provide more digital slots to their customers. ::::: side note :::::: There is some hope in our future to get digital cable with out a tuner box. The FCC has mandated a "Tuner Card" that looks a lot like a PCMCIA card used in laptops. This card will slot into a TV eliminating the ugly black box. I’m sure it will not be long before our tuner card companies incorporate it into their design. :::::: end side note :::::: In the mean time you can use a serial link or an IR Blaster device to control your digital cable box from your Myth Box. info on how to do this is located in the WIKI and in this fourm. |

Time Warner in my area currently offers CableCards for $1.75/mo for CableCard ready devices. $1,000,000 question, is the WinTV-PVR card a CableCard ready device? |
