I have a Time Warner cable box and it appears that channels over 99 are encrytped so I need to cable box to descrable high channels.

Am I correct to assume if I only have one cable box that I can not record a show on channel 200 and watch another one on 205 with my current hardware.

My Hardware:
WinTV-PVR Card 350
Explorer 8000 (Time Warner Cable Box)

I would think there should be a way for me to watch channel 75 and record 200, but that doesn't really address the question at hand. I have looked thrughout these forums and found posts that hint at my conclusion, I just want to verify it.

Thanks

actually there is no way with one capture card for you to watch any channel and record another one. 1card=1channel in addition 1cablebox=1channel. sorry to tell you that, but it's just the way it is.

Is there anyway to do this (record channel 1 and watch channel 2) with a PVR-500?

ok at the time when I wrote that comment the pvr500 either didn't exist or didn't have drivers.

Yes the 500 has two tuners so it acts just like two cards to the computer, so yes you can record one show and watch one live, or record two shows with the 500, but the drivers are still a bit shaky and in heavy development.

I always try to explain it in terms of effective tuners...

If you have to tune everything via a cable/satellite box that's your effective tuner(s) and the limiting step. No matter how many tuners you put in the PVR/DVR box you can't record (and watching live is actually recording) more things than the box(es) will decrypt. Given unencrypt feed(s) you are limited by the number of tuners in your PVR. In between there are lots of combinations.
