Post subject: | complete newbie help needed (network adaptor) |
Hi guys. I've got Knoppmyth installed ok. When it boots up I get a few 'Failed' messages, not sure if that's normal or not. The first problem I'm having is that my network adaptor doesn't seem to be working so MythTV isn't able to retrieve any TV listings over the Internet. I have a wireles PCMCIA network adaptor installed in the PCMCIA slot on an EPIA mII motherboard. Strangely, if I run Knoppix off the live CD this is installed without any problems, but that doesn't seem to be the case with KnoppMyth. I've used Linux in the past, but I don't have a clue about resolving harware difficulties from the console. I've switched to the console window from the MythTV frontend using Ctrl+Alt+F1 (BTW how do you get back into MythTV once you have done this?), and then if I try and ping an Internet host I get the message 'unknown host...' I think I'm going to need a lot of help to get this up and running. Can someone help me out? Many thanks in advance. |

I've just installed R5A12 instead of R5A10 and it did seem a lot happier when booting up (less 'Failed' messages). However I still get the same problem with the network adaptor not working. If anyone could shed any light on this (possibly another MII user?) that would be great. Thanks. |

During installation i was asked if I wanted to use DHCP broadcast (which should have worked). I selected 'yes' and then was given a failed error message. I tried to ping my router from the console and got the message "connect: network is unreachable". Can someone gie me some help on getting my network card installed and working properley? Thanks. |

what kind of MB do you have? also what network card? i.e. My MB has 2 NIC built in (100mb and 1000mb). I disabled the 1000mb in the BIOS yet it still shows up as eth1 and if I accidently pick the wrong NIC, then the box doesn't like it too much. |

The motherboard is a Via Epia MII 12000 mini-itx motherboard, and the network adaptor is a netgear PCMCIA wireless network adaptor. The motherboard does also have a built-in 100Mb network adaptor, which is disabled in BIOS |

well the onboard nic would probably work, but you'll have to search the forums there are many post about wireless network cards. Sorry there is no simple solution. |

ok after a bit of searching and playing around I've got the network adaptor up and running using the prism54 drivers. If I run: Code: pump -i eth0 the card is able to get itself an IP address and then I can ping the router - excellent stuff. Now I just need to make some changes to get the card to be configured automatically each time I boot. I've added the following to my /etc/network/interfaces file Code: auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp #configure the card to use g mode, adjust or leave out if you need something else: pre-up /sbin/iwpriv eth0 mode 3 which is meant to set up the card upon boot, however it doesn't seem to work and when I reboot I need to run pump -i eth0 to get the card an IP address. Can someone tell me where I'm going wrong? Thanks. |

Ah, I've managed to get this up and running using netcardconfig, which was nice and straight forward. It just left the line Code: iface eth0 inet dchp
in my /etc/network/interfaces file - does netcardconfig change any other files? |
