Post subject:  Knoppmyth 5A10 and AverTv DVB-T 771

Just be kind to a beginner...

I have the above mentioned card (which worked in FC3 after updating kernel and udev). From my limited previous FC3 and Mdk 10.1 linux experience I know I either need kernel 2.6.10 or dvb drivers from CVS (the problem is the MT352 frontend).

The problem is I didn't manage to find how to do any of the two...

DVB drivers instruction is available only for R4 (I think) and I don't know how to adapt it for the new version (which has important updates for DVB).

For kernel updating I am afraid that the knoppmyth kernel should differ from the stock kernel so that it would cause problems. Is there a specific package I can use? I tried to use Synaptic to download a 2.6.10 kernel but lilo was not updated.
I have also tried to download source packages; I now have a tar file which seems a stock 2.6.10 kernel and a folder which seems to contain debian patches; should I untar the source, apply those patches, do a "make oldconfig" etc. etc. (including the MT352 module, obviously), would I obtain a compatible kernel?

What is the easiest way?

Thanks in advance

Luca

Post subject:  I did it

Just in case anybody is interested I managed to work it out in what I believe is a very nonlinux style; I know there are many unneccessary steps.
Anyone is welcome to suggest a cleaner and more elegant procedure; I'm a beginner and it shows...

PLEASE NOTE: people is reporting trouble in following these instructions, so please be careful, ok? I really am I beginner; this is just what happened to work in my computer.

Using synaptic I installed all packages kernel packages related to version 2.6.10 (kernel-image-2.6.10-1-k7, then headers, source, patch-debian and more, I put all seemed remotely related...).

Update: I forgot to say I have also updated UDEV. I don't have the pc available at the moment so I don't remember to what versione exactly. I used synaptic and downloaded the most updated version available.

Then I had to modify lilo:

- In order to navigate through the disk I installed konqueror;

- for text editing I installed kate;

- as I don't know how to modify LILO I installed package lilo-config a "KDE Frontend for lilo configuration"; this is actually a part of the KDE control center which, if I remember correctly, was installed as a dependency.

- Konqueror can be launched through a terminal (type "konqueror"), preferably for now as root;

- in the "Go" menu select application; you can see the items in the familiar KDE menu, including "Control Center".

- In Control Center, under the "System Administration" group, you find "Boot Manager" that allows you to modify lilo config; in my case function "Probe" found the new kernel (plus other garbage I cancelled - be sure not to cancel the reference to the old 2.6.9 kernel).
I would suggest to modify the time lilo waits before loading the default kernel in order to allow you to choose the kernel at boot; please leave the old 2.6.9 kernel as default and choose the new one at startup.

- At this point modules must still be loaded; so I edited the file "/etc/modules" adding

dvb_core
bt878
mt352
dvb_bt8xx

I also had to remove the module "bttv" (it loaded a related sound module which stopped the card from working), but it is likely a problem with my mainboard (a asus A7V333 with integrated CMI 8738 audio) and a few other.

- Use "dmesg" to see if the card works (if you see something like "registering frontend MT352" it's done).

I'm sorry if it's a mess.
I hope somebody better than me will write better instructions.

Ciao
Luca

Thanks benotto, I had the same problem.

I ended up going over to windows meedio because I'm too much of a linux newbie to try and fix it.

Hopefully soon they will have the new kernel etc. built in so I don't have to do all that stuff.

Yes..... I am lazy :P
