Anybody got a step by step guide to getting this card to work with R5v12?

Been through Benotos guide a few times, all resulting in a fresh install.

I'm new to Linux (been using Myth for a couple of years) but still don't understand the consiquenses of my actions.

Help with patching the kernel and installing required modules would be great, with the missing links a noob would need.

I'm going through the same at the moment, I ended up upgrading from R5A10 to R5A12 to see if that was any easier. (As I trashed my R5A10 installation in the process of trying to get the card working)

There is some info on the Wiki:
http://knoppmythwiki.homelinux.org/index.php?page=DVBHowTo

But I couldn't make that work either...
(and it's for R4, so I don't know how much of that still applies)

I'll post here if I figure it out (And I'm a linux newbie, so it'll be a posting even I can undersand  )

I don't understand why, if so many people have to upgrade the kernal (and it is apparently not that hard for anybody who actually knows a bit about linux) why isn't it allready packaged with knoppmyth??

I have the same card as you guys and ended up giving up and just waiting in hope that the next version has the new kernal included..

Hopefully now that the new version of myth tv is out that won't be too far away.....

well no compiling a kernel is not that hard, but making all the patches for everything knoppmyth supports work together in a new kernel is. Most people who are using these dvb cards aren't using lots of other stuff and don't have to apply all kinds of patches to the kernel. Now it we released a version that had a newer kernel and didn't apply the patches then we would make the 3 or 4 of you with this dvb card happy and have that many and probably more with some other device that didn't work cause the patch was missing. that said the latest test releases have been upgraded to 2.6.11.? so some of the dvb cards will be working, however the last I heard there were some dvb patches that will not cleanly apply to the now supposed stable branch of the kernel.

Thanks for replying.

I understand the issues involved, but also want to learn (more like stumble) at the same time.

Having read many posts on the AverMedia DVB-T 771, a few people are asking for help with setting up the remote, I must assume these people have the card working for TV?

Any one shed any light on how you got there, or are you like me, get there, but are unsure of the route taken.

I think I'll switch back to my PVR250, until the next release.

I'm sorry I caused you trouble. I edited the post signaling that people had problems with it.

Don't call it a "guide", that's way to much! It's just the procedure I followed to make it work... I'm just a beginner with Linux, probably a lucky one.

I downloaded (and I'm using) what I think is a "debian testing" 2.6.10 kernel. I did not compile it. I used that procedure in order to be able to update lilo to show the new kernel at boot; I can still access the old knoppmyth kernel should I want to. There definately are many error concerning not found modules at boot, likely they concern modules I don't use (e.g. serverworks chipset is not probably used in many pcs)

I really hope I didn't make more harm than good in publishing that procedure, but it looks like nobody with a 771 is explaining how to run it in a way a beginner can understand... I bought the 771 in september and I managed to run it in Fedora Core 3 for the first time in february...
Be careful, the DVB guide in the wiki refers to the DVB-T 761, nothing to do with the 771.

A question to the developers, could it be possible for us to try the test release with the 2.6.11 kernel? Can we access it somewhere?

I just posted a link in the Hardware forum, HOWTO: Setting up AVerMedia A771 DVB-T card under Linux

Check it out, I know it doesnt go into detail about getting it working with Myth, but it should be more than enough detail to get your driver loaded.

Once you have that, im sure you can piece together the info from other posts to get the channels tuned in.

I havent actually done this myself yet. My a771 card arrives tomorrow, so then I will be stuck into it.

Cheers,

Benotto

Sorry, I wasn't suggesting that you were at fault for posting a helpfull post.

It's one of the most helpfull posts on the forum for step by step instructions, it just dosen't work in my case.

Other posts make assumptions that we all know where to get the kernel updaters from, that we all know how and where to unpack them and we all know how to compile them, and I suppose if we don't we shouldn't.

Actually I feel at fault because I realize the inadequacy of such procedure; I was actually hoping for someone more skilled than me (and it doesn't take much!) to suggest a better one.
Come on, I had to install half kde because I don't how to modify lilo.conf... I do realize myself it's ridiculous!

Knoppmyth is an enormous help for setting up Mythtv and I truly appreciate the job being done and the help provided by this forum; yet it is far from being easy especially if you have unsupported hardware.

The procedure suggested by jacobsa, for example, is possibly easy enough for kernel 2.4 but I can't understand how to follow it in 2.6.

Good luck

I totally agree, Knoppmyth is great, I'd been putting of learning linux for ages and knoppmyth gave me a relatively easy way in and gave me somthing I couldn't build with windows.

Benotto, don't feel at fault, you've shown us that it can be made to work and that it can be done by a relative newbie. You've given us hope. :D

What I would like to see is a step by step guide in updating the 2.6.9 kernel in R5A12 to 2.6.10 (or maybe even 11) can anyone help us?

Mephi, be careful because the procedure in the Wiki refers to the older Avertv DVB-T 761 and not the 771 that is totally different.

That post actually is the reason why I bought my 771 despite the ugly Windows software thinking it it was supported in Linux.

...anyway, the remote doesn't work yet!

Yeah, but I've tried the wiki instructions anyway...
I don't mind trashing my system, it's ready to deployed to the front room yet, so I'm getting good at reinstalling Knoppmyth :)

I've got a 250 in there as well, and that remote's fine, so I don't think I'll use the AverTv one.

I'd suggest waiting a few more days and then upgrading to the next release (R5A14, probably) when it is out.

That would be great, but I've not yet seen any confirmation that the next release would contain a kernel update, do you know something I don't? (Which, lets be honest here, is very likely...)

Ignore me, I've just seen this post by cesman (very bottom):
http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=4235

So we're getting 2.6.11.7-chw-3 :D
