Post subject:  Reviving relic PC for audio/photo only frontend/backend

Hi everyone.

I'm looking to use KnoppMyth and some old hardware to create an audio/photo frontend/backend for my HT. Before you ask I already have a DVR from the cable company (work for 'em). I'm solely interested in getting this machine to play .ogg files and display digital photos. I'm using old hardware because it needs a purpose and my budget is about $150 US. It's slim, I know.

Here's the hardware specs (and keep in mind for now audio is the goal):

AMD K-6iii 400mhz processor
384 mb pc100 sdram
Asus P5A mobo (can't remember BIOS version; will make current)
Matrox g400 32mb dual head (just for display purpose)
SoundBlaster Live sound card
80gb WD HDD
Linksys WMP11 .11b wireless PCI NIC (don't know chipset yet)

This is the case I'm looking to put all this in:

I'll still need to buy an IR receiver.

I'm just looking for thoghts on whether it'll work or if I should just dump the idea along with the hardware off a cliff.

Another thing to keep in mind is that I'm quite new to Linux. I'm a little uncomfortable with Linux command line anything. I've been running Xandros 3 OCE for about 2 weeks now and really like it. This project will just be an extension of my Windows exedus.

I really apprecieate anyone's thoughts on this subject and thank you in advance.

Thanks.

Brian

- Badly underpowered processor, might be OK for just audio but then why use KnoppMyth? It's like getting a top of the line Dremel tool just to trim your toenails...

- This is a new model so it might better, but I seem to remember the older cooler master desktop cases having a problem with heat build up... Check the NewEgg reviews on other CoolerMaster desktops cases...
