Post subject:  System hangs when watching Live TV with KnoppMyth R5A15

Hi guys. I had the same problem with R5A12 and I was hoping this new release would fix it, unfortunately it hasn't.

My problem is that when I go to Live TV, after about 10 seconds or so everything will completely hang, no key combination will get me away from the frozen picture so I have to manually reboot.

Here's my harware:
Via Epia MII 12000
1GB RAM
40GB HDD
Hauppauge PVR350

I'm in the UK so I've got KnoppMyth set up with PAL.

If there's any extra info I can provide please let me know, I'd love to get this problem fixed.

are you using the pvr350 for output or the onboard video? If you are using the onboard video are you using the epia debs?

Thansk for your reply. I'm using onboard video at the moment - I wanted to get everything working correctly before I switched over to TV-out.

I'm not using the epia-specific debs, I wasn't aware there were any for R5A15. Is it still

Code:
dpkg -i /usr/srcv/mythtv/epia/*.deb

to install them?

I believe so, but I don't have an epia, so I haven't followed it too closely, cesman may have included that stuff in the regular debs, but I don't remember hearing that, but I do remember hearing that you have to actually go check the use xvmc box in the new versions.

There's no /usr/src/mythtv/epia folder so I'm hoping it's included.

where is it I need to check the xvmc box? Is that only if I want to use tv out?

the xvmc box is for accelerated mpeg2 playback. Mpeg2 files are what you get with pvr cards and I don't know that it's strictly neccesary, but If I remember correctly it was posted that on a 1G system without it took about 80%CPU to playback and with it was in the teens. the option is in the setings tv playback menu somewhere.

Thanks I'll see if I can find the option to enable xvmc and see if that helps matters.

I thought I read that your Via Epia chpset had a bug in it, when it gets a large number of dma request , like thoe ones that come from the pvr-350 it freeze the machine.

That's exactly what I've been reading here:

http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=4302

and here:

http://gossamer-threads.com/lists/ivtv/ ... via;#19915

Although most people mention they get the problem when recording, and I get it when I just try and watch Live TV.

VIA have released a test BIOS that suposedly fixes the problem. I'm currently checking if it will work with my motherboard (MII series) as well as the one they mentioned (M series)

I couldn't find the xvmc setting XSecrets, if you can give me more direction on where to find it I'll give it a go.

On the DMA issue. I've read that it might fix the problem if I disable DMA. I'll like to try this temporarily just to see if it fixes the problem (although it doesn't sound like a long term solution). Can someone tell me how to disable DMA?

Thanks.

To turn Xvmc , on the frontend goto utilities/setup>tv settings>playback its like on the third or fourth page of options.
To disable DMA I think you can use hdparm -d0 /dev/device ,but I would look into this carefully never tried myself. In other words use at your own risk.

Thanks for that. On the page with the option for XVMC there is also an option to 'enable HW XVMC VLD Decoding (Via only)', so I enabled that along with the 'Use hardware XvMC MPEG decoding. Unfortunately this did not fix the problem.

I'll see if I can find any more info on disabling DMA - whether it's a good idea or not.
