Post subject:  Can 1 remote control 2 tuner cards, if one card's a Freestyl

Hi all:

I ordered a Hauppauge PVR-250 retail box for a great price. when it showed up, I found out why the price was so great. It was not a PVR-250, but a PVR Freestyle. Of course, this card has no remote or I/R functionality built in. This left me wondering whether the card is worth keeping...

1. Is it possible to control a second tuner with the remote from the first tuner card if the second card is a Freestyle? If so, how?

2. Has anyone got a Freestyle working with KnoppMyth? What kind of quality did you get?

Thanks all for any input.

1) the remote controls mythtv, so yes one remote will control as many tuner cards as you can throw at one box.

And once again Xsecrets comes to my aid!

Thanks. And that is even if the Freestyle has no infrared or remote features, yes?

I guess I might as well just go out and buy a PVR-150 or a PVR-250 and use this as my second card?

yes the way the remote works. lircd catches and translates the ir signals into keypresses that do different things withing the program. so one remote will control any type or number of cards. all you need is one card that has a remote. or the ati remote wonder uses rf and an rf reciever that comes with the remote and it can control all cards even if none of them have remotes. you will only ever need one remote of whatever type (has to be supported in linux of course) per computer. Of course if you go to multiple frontend computers each will need its own remote.

if you currently have a remote control, simple modify your .lircrc and map a button to change tuner. (look in the mythtv.org documentation on which key cycles the tuners).

well if both cards use the same video source ( I would imagine this is most often the case, unless one is hd) then you shouldn't ever have to worry about the key to change cards.

Just to make sure you understand enough so you can teach the next guy... ;-) (Just like the old saw about learning to do surgical procedures - "Watch one, do one, teach one")

The remote doesn't actually control the tuner card. The MythTV software and the IVTV driver control the tuner(s). The remote is just another input device like a joystick or a keyboard. The remote actually looks like a second keyboard to MythTV and once the Myth software has the "keyboard" commands it plays traffic cop and controls the other devices. The question you asked is thus analogous to "Can I control more than one harddrive with only one keyboard?" ;-)
