Post subject:  Two channels come in clear, the rest static

I have a PVR-250 in my KnoppMyth linux box. I set up everything fine, except that only two channels come in, channel 5 and 6. The rest is static. I know the tuner card itself works, because I tested it with Windows and all the channels came in.

How is it possible that the card will work for some channels, but none others? Any help would be appreciated.

My system is at P4 1.6 ghz with 256 megs of ram.

The tuner is probably being set incorrectly.

Try commenting out or removing the tuner designation in the following file

/etc/mythtv/modules/ivtv

-brendan

Commenting out the ivtv file didn't work, the tuner still does that same thing. Here's my ivtv file:

Code:
alias char-major-81 videodev
alias char-major-61 lirc_i2c
#options ivtv debug=1
#options tuner type=39
#options msp3400 once=1 simple=1
install ivtv /sbin/modprobe tuner; /sbin/modprobe msp3400; /sbin/modprobe saa7115;  /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install  ivtv
remove ivtv /sbin/modprobe -r --ignore-remove ivtv && /sbin/modprobe -r saa7115 && /sbin/modprobe -r msp3400 && /sbin/modprobe -r tuner

My card is the Model 980 version of the Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-250 series. It seems like it should be supported by default. Would recompiling a newer version of ivtv help at all?
[/code]

Don't know.

I'm tempted to leave it at that but I don't have the patience tonight to annoy you into realizing how frustrating it is to have to drag enough detailed information out of people to diagnose their problems... ;-)

P: "Doctor, it hurts."
D: "What hurts?"
P: "Doctor, it hurts real bad!"
D: "What hurts real bad?"
P: "Doctor, why won't you tell me how to make it stop hurting?"
D: "..."

And people wonder why they get told, "Take two asprin and call me in the morning..." :?

Please provide more hardware details (searching the forum will provide many examples of how to do this). Please provide the output of this command: (searching the forum will provide more information on how to diagnose this):
Code:
dmesg | sed -n '/= START INIT IVTV/,/=  END INIT IVTV/p'

In the meantime, please make two searches of the forum and post again in the morning... ;-)

... also, what version of knoppmyth are you using? Commenting out the tuner type only really works in R5. If you are using R4, I think you are down to trial and error (search the older posts for some possible values to try). Alternatively, just install the latest R5.

Sorry for not doing this before, here's some more detail about my setup:

KnoppMyth version: R5A15
I have a Dell Dimension 4300
1.6 GHz P4 with 256mb RAM

Here's the output of the "dmesg | sed -n '/= START INIT IVTV/,/= END INIT IVTV/p'" command:

My tuner video input is set to 4 with the '/usr/bin/ivtvctl -p 4' command. I just get a black screen with any other input setting.
I use Tuner0 for my video feed since I'm using coax cable.
My NTSC resolution is set to 720x480.

Doing a '/bin/lspci -v' command, It seems like its detected properly:
Code:
0000:02:0a.0 Multimedia video controller: Internext Compression Inc iTVC16 (CX23416) MPEG-2 Encoder (rev 01)
Subsystem: Hauppauge computer works Inc. WinTV PVR 250

   Memory at f8000000 (32-bit, prefetchable) [size=64M]
Capabilities: [44] Power Management version 2

Doing 'grep tveeprom: /var/log/messages' shows:
Code:
Jun  2 21:29:41 mythtv kernel: tveeprom: Hauppauge: model = 32062, rev = C182, serial# = 7913616
Jun  2 21:29:41 mythtv kernel: tveeprom: tuner = LG TAPC H791F (idx = 82, type = 39)

Jun  2 21:29:41 mythtv kernel: tveeprom: audio_processor = MSP3445 (type = 12)

Also, while 2 channels come in crystal clear, the rest are static/snow, but a few have some sound, although distorted.

Do you have the right frequency set selected? Some cable systems use us-cable-hrc rather than us-cable, and if you're not on cable you need us-broadcast. BTW - "5 and 6 come in clear everything else is trash" is a familiar problem, a search should find similar cases with solutions...

Okay, that worked. Setting it to us-cable-hrc did the trick. Now everything comes in fine.
