Hi,

I have been working a couple of days on my Linux settopbox, and made allot of progress thanks to this forum!
Now “all” I need to figure out is how to get a nice, clear TV signal on tuner0.
All I get is static, and I can't figure out where the problem is. I’m running r5a16, I found the guide for r5a12. Perhaps I should start from scratch and install that version instead?
When I run MythTV, the channel info is fine, but no TV signal. Only static. I also tried to use ptune and cat /dev/video0. Only static.

I then ran “scantv”, but no luck, I get an error message about the input: “invalid value for input television valid choices for “input”:S-Video 0….(lists the inputs of PVR-150)”. The program scan all the frequencies but can’t find any channels I googled this error but couldn’t find a similar situation.

I think the information in /var/log/messages looks pretty healthy, but I might be wrong (I'm a complete n00b to Knoppmyth!):

The PAL setting is set to D/K which is wrong, it should be B (I’m living in Denmark). How to I change that? And does it matter?

I have tried to set the tuner type manually (to type 4). No success, but I guess that shouldn’t be necessary since the tuner type is detected automatically?

My settings:

ivtv:
Code:
alias char-major-61 lirc_i2c
alias char-major-81 videodev
alias char-major-81-0 ivtv
options tuner type=4
options standard=0x08
options tuner pal=G
options tda9887 qss=0
options cx25840 no_black_magic=1

set_ivtv_params:
Code:
#!/bin/bash
ivtvctl -d /dev/video0 -u 1 -f width=720,height=576 -p 6
# End

My system:
Knoppmyth r5a16
ivtv 0.3.2r
Athlon 1200 MHz
Geforce mx400
PVR-150 PAL(silver remote)

Any idea what to do next? - Any suggestions would be appreciated!

funtex, check out this post I've been following. I have close to the same setup as you and my static/snow issue was resolved.

Hope this helps!

Hi entourage,

Thanks for the response!
I already tried you solution, but I get an error doing boot (something like "Unknown parameter mixer_input"). Knoppmyth then fail to load the module for the pvr-150 card. Also, I'm wondering why you are writing tuner=39,50 ivtv_std=1,1? I guess your card only has a single tuner or are you using to cards? tuner=39,50 reefers to your tuner type, right?

Also, could you please post the content of your set_ivtv_params, if it's different from mine?

Thanks!

Hi funtex,
I've almost the same hardware as you and the same problem. What type of PVR150 do you use? On the retail box (Hauppauge PVR 150) it says type 1041 and as fas as I understood this card needs tuner type 52. Furthermore I found that certain kernels (<2.6.11) need patching for this tuner type but I can't really figure out if the kernel which is on R5A16 needs this patch.
Any progress with your project?

Regards,
Fiete

Hi fiete,

No progress yet! -sorry.
my model is 1060(sticker on box), and according to /var/log/messages my tuner type is: philips type= 4 idx = 55
I'm not sure that the number 1060 should be used?
I have changed the version of the ivtv to 3.2r(described in several thread in this forum -but no luck).
I haven't seen any threads about pacthing the kernel?

Hi funtex,
I have found the reference for the patching issue:

http://www.ivtv.tv/releases/new_tuners/

As far as I understood there is no need for patching as your tuner card is recognized....
Some people got to work the PVR 150 work properly:

http://www.shspvr.com/smf/index.php?PHP ... pic=7918.0

Maybe you can find details for your tuner here:

Fiete

funtex, sorry for the delay. My set_ivtv_params file is this:

#!/bin/bash

/usr/local/bin/ivtvctl -d /dev/video0 -u 1 -f width=720,height=480 -p 6

The problem I seem to be running into is I don't have any output to my TV. I've had no problems recording and playing live TV, but it's only showing up on my Monitor.

Hope this helps!

BTW, I just used the directions from another post which is why
tuner=39,50 ivtv_std=1,1

I was just so excited to see live TV instead of static that I haven't changed it. I do blieve that I only would need tuner=39 ivtv_std=1

I'll try it and post my results.

Hi funtex,

I've had the same problem as you. Now I think that I have part of a solution:

1) switch to console and become su
2) rmmod ivtv
3) modprobe ivtv ivtv_debug=1 ivtv_std=2 tuner=37
4) next I could use ptune-ui.pl to change to a channel and
5) cat /dev/video0 > test.mpg

The resulting test.mpg was kristalclear and with sound! But:
the result of tveeprom (in /var/log/messages) was: tuner=55. I assume that the tuner is not recognized welll by tveeprom or that ivtv-driver takes the result not into account. My knowlegde of linux is very limitied with respect to loading modules and symbols and so on.
Oh, I did this on another distro (Suse 9.3 professional) but I think that the basic things like modprobe en rmmod are the same in knoppmyth and Suse. I have no idea how to make the tuner=37 permanent, got lots of errors when I put the params ivtv_std=2 and tuner=37 in the modprobe.conf.local file (which is Suse specific).

Hope that this will give a clue,
Regards,
Fiete

Hi fiete,

Thanx for the reply!
I just manged to get it working, pretty much as you just described.
It seem that, when ivtv writes type 4 in the /var/log/message doing autodetect, it means that it in fact DIDN'T autodect the tuner at all!(according to a post in one of the links you posted above). So i tried to change my /etc/mythtv/modules/ivtv to look like this:

Code:
alias char-major-81 videodev
alias char-major-81-0 ivtv
alias char-major-61 lirc_i2c
options ivtv ivtv_std=2 tuner=37,51 tda9887=0 ivtv_debug=0
options tuner pal=G
options saa7127 i2c_enable=1,-1
options wm8775 debug=0
install ivtv /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install ivtv ; /sbin/modprobe ivtv-fb
.

It was now possible to watch tv, using ptune and mplayer.
Unfortunatly the picture was kind of pixelized, so I tried to change the tuner type. It helped to set it to tuner=51,51. Now the picture is crystal clear!

But only as long I am using the ptune/mplayer. if I try to watch TV using mythTV the picture is still pixelated!!

I'm trying to update the ivtv driver right now....any other suggestions?

Cheers
Funtex

entourage, how does it go with you TV problem?
What kind of gfx ar you using?
I'm using an old GForce, and had very few problems setting it up.
Did you rember to use the TV command doing the install?
I guess you already have seen this page?

http://mysettopbox.tv

You will need to change some settings in XF86config-4

funtex, unfortunately for me, I have an ATI Rage 128 Pro ViVo and everything keeps pointing to Nvidia being the way to go. What size video card are you using, 32, 64, 128?
I've seen the XF86Config-4 posts and added the extra settings with no success.
I'll probably just try to pick up a second hand Nvidia card from eBay.

Hi funtex,

Good to read. What ivtv driver do you use? I 've installed the "unstable" 0.3.6i., works fine. Any trouble with the remote control of the PVR-150?

Regards,
Fiete
