Post subject: | Mad Dog USB DVD burner problem. |
Hi all: I've had limited exposure to Linux and non to KnoppMyth until yesterday. I've successfully installed and configured a KnoppMyth box running on a Via M10000 itx board but I've hit a snag and just don't understand hardware configurations on Linux. I can't use my external USB Mad Dog DVD burner. The OS can't seem to see it and neither can MythTV or Xine. Xine comes back with a pair of error messages when I click on the DVD button. No input plugin available to handle 'DVD/'. Maybe MRL syntax is wrong or file/stream source doesn't exist. When I press <DONE> that window closes and a new message window opens and says. The source can't be read. Maybe you don't have enough rights for this, or source doesn't contain data (e.g.: no disk in drive.) /dev/dvd. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. |

I'd suggest a Google for Linux and USB DVD burners. You may need to load a module. Once you have it figured out, you should just need to place that module in /etc/modules or you can get real adventureous and try hotplug. |

Post subject: | symbolic link |
It was a symbolic link issue. I can now watch some DVDs but others look like they'll need a codec of some sort. One problem I have though is lack of throughput. The external DVD RAM drive is USB 2, but that doesn't seem to be able to keep up to play a DVD, though it's fast enough for VCDs. |

I have the throughput problem solved. I ran a couple of updates and added a decoder and it started working properly. |

Like I said, a buddy of mine created the symbolic link. I added the (can't talk about because of legalities) software. Then it worked fine. I e-mailed my buddy and she'll send me the syntax of adding a symbolic link to a USB drive. We also made Xine the default player for VCDs. I'm buying another buddy's video capture device in the near future so that I can record my shows, but that's for another thread. |

This is what my buddy sent me on what she did: ln -s src alias Creates an alias to src, eg ln -s /dev/sr0 /dev/dvd (You can drop the absolute paths if you are already in dev) Also, check out http://www.theonion.com/2056-06-22/index_b.php ![]() I hope this helps. |
