Hey All,

I understand in KnoppMyth {and various postings} that the only way
to install the Nvidia driver is with the custom built install-nvidia-XXXX.sh script.

Who maintains these and how do I get it.. Is this an apt-get package?

Normally in other distro's I would just download from Nvidia and run its
script, but if I understand this correctly this will break in Knoppmyth.

I would like to take advantage of this newer driver as it has some fixes
to Xvmc.

Any info would be appreciated.

If you read this thread over at mythtv-users:

http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/m ... ers/137264

you may be less eager to try to upgrade to 7667...

Hmm I will assume that Mythtv complained about this issue... on that forum. However, it doesn't sound like his upgrade was complete...

Perhaps some of the files from the previous version were left behind.

Also it could be something like this post.

http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic. ... light=xvmc

Also note that this driver is required if you have a Nvidia 7800.

For the record, I am more then happy with using Xvmc.... It rocks
and the less my CPU has to do with Mythtv all the better... Especially
when watching live tv or a recording.. My CPU with Xvmc enabled is
roughly 92+% idle... Even with HD content. That rocks IMHO.

if you take a look at that install script it is extreamely simple to modify for a new version of the drivers. I updated it for the last nvidia driver version.

And I don't guess those lazy @#$@#%@#%'s are ever going to fix the 1080i bug. Before long we'll have to recommend something other than nvidia if you plan on hdtv.

well yeah I guess I should have said it's ridiculously simple to modify the script to work with a new version, but you never know if people even know how to edit files.

Just a word of caution, but rushing to the latest release of the nvidia drivers is generally not recommended unless your system is already seriously broken in some way. ;-) The good news is that Cecil has made it really easy to revert to an older version...

However, all is going very well on the new drivers... even Xvmc....
No issues here! Got lucky this time... : )

I've just downloaded and installed the 7667 nvidia drivers on R5A16, for a 6200 based AGP videocard (MSI branded). This is a fresh install, rather than an upgrade, and there were no obvious problems (I modified the MythTv install scripts).

The X11 output is good. Have not tried the TV out yet, so no report on that. CPU usage (Celeron 2.4GHz) while playing DVD was 95% and dropped frames (Xine complained, and the action was jerky) with the unaccelerated vesa driver at 1024x768. With the 7667 drivers CPU usage dropped down to neglegible. XvMC is on; so far so good (20 minutes of playing total, this is 11th hour news),.

This card (like all 6200 cards, it appears) has component video out. I'm planning to use that with my HDTV monitor (a Sony wega crt with HDTV display and NTSC tuner). The monitor does 480p and 1080i but not 720p.

I thought I could try 480p and 540p, and maybe 1080i (<-- what's the story with the 1080i bug?). Any good suggestions for a modeline tip?

If Xsecrets says that 1080i is still broken with 7667 then you should believe him. The race doesn't always go to the swift, the battle doesn't always go to the strong, and even someone with a full bag of clues and the knowledge of what it do with them isn't always right, but I know where I'd putting my money.... ;-)

Alas, I don't question that wisdom. Only looking for better understanding. Since 540p is more or less the same as 1080i, I'd like to understand if I should stick with 480p.

search the forums there have been some lively discussions on 540p vs 1080i, basically they are not the same thing. I haven't tried 540p, but my guess is it would work, I think the problem is with the nvidia's interlaced output.

Here's a shot of my system using a "new" nVidia driver at 1080i. I am using the VGA output of the 5200 card and driving the VGA input of my Pioneer RPTV.
