Post subject:  Can't boot up Knoppmyth

I installed Knoppmyth and after reboot I do notice (while it is attemping to boot up) in RED it says 'Knoppmyth found no multimedia video cards'

I have an ATI Radeon 9200SE 128mb ram video card and also an avermedia tuner capture card (Avertv Go 009 Plus)

The last thing I see is a blinking 'Input Not Supported' on my monitor. I can't do anything but shut down.

My video card and tv tuner/capture card works fine in Windows.

What does this have to do with the price of tea in China? The simply fact is that most manufactuers don't release Linux drivers. While ATi does, they suck. I have no idea if your tuner card is support (sorry, I've got other things to do rather than track this down when you can yourself). As for booting... You're really not providing enough information. How are you shutting down? What other hardware do you have? Where in the boot process do you see this message? hat other messages are on screen before?

Lilo 22.6.1 begins it's boot up process. At 'Starting Gnome Display Manager' about 30 seconds into the bootup it stops and I'm presented with a black screen that has a message saying 'Input Not Supported'.

The only thing I can do is look at the black screen (with 'Input Not Supported' displayed) or shut down by pressing the power off button on my case.

And by the way, I'm a noob to Linux. I've only tried Knoppix Live CD a few times so please try and be nice.

My hardware is:
ATI Radeon 9200SE 128mb, avermedia tuner capture card (Avertv Go 009 Plus) AMD Sempron 2400+, Ecs K7VTA3 motherboard, 512mb PC3200, 550 power supply, 40gb wd hard drive, dvdrw drive, ethernet pci card.

If I get it to work maybe I'll buy a bigger hard drive :)

I got it to work with an old PNY Geforce2 64mb video card.

The Gigabyte 9200se card wouldn't work. If someone knows why (or better yet how to get my better video card to work) please let me know.

Thanks

Try and be nice... Try and be nice?! How much nicer do you want me to be?! I spend a great deal of my free time working on KnoppMyth. I host this site/forum on my dime. I spend a great deal of time compile and recompile so you don't have to. I track down errors, I google, I patch.... I wake up in the middle of the night thinking 'ahha! that is why it won't compile'. How much nicer should I be?

What I was trying to get across was that if you can't be tactful (which cesman apparantly can't be) don't reply at all. I would rather not have to read cesman's responses. I'd much prefer to wait for some one who is empathetic.

I don't care who creates this site/forum, if 'cesman' is creating a bash those who are trying Linux forum then fine, I won't participate any more. Just wish I would have known on the front page from the start as to the type of 'help' available.

I'm not sure if you've ever been on any forums or any type of community help sites, but I think you'll find that this is one of the best at least that I've been on the help is quick and generally friendly. Some that spend much time helping other people tire of answering questions over and over again. If you had searched for radeon you would have found tons of post saying stay away from them, and one or two claiming to have gotten them to work, followed by many other people who couldn't. And then there's the fact that we all have bad days. It's painfully obvious from these forums that I've had some myself.

Thanks Xsecrets. I guess I was just frustrated in not knowing what to do.

There have been a rash of newbies lately who don't search or find the answers relevant to their question, then get all huffy when they get the slightest rebuke.

Please be aware of what you're doing, and who you're interacting with when you go to an open-source forum or mailing list. It's considered bad form to lash out at the person who is the primary moving force behind the product.

"cesman" isn't just someone who helps out on the forum -- Cecil and Dale ARE Knoppmyth. They invented it, they maintain it, they keep it going. That's "nice" enough for me. Some of the other key contributors are Xsecrets and tjc. My advice is not to lash out at any of them. (Me, however, you may freely use as a punching bag since I don't know anything and I love a good scrap.)

Or, on a more practical note, you might consider that cesman is the one person who holds the keys to this forum and can block you.

P.S. If you really want to get b-slapped, go to the MythTv mailing list and throw some barbs at a guy named "Isaac". Wear your asbestos undies.

Just another thought, remember that you're dealing with people with a problem solving rather than a touchie-feelie mindset.

Both have their place, but given the basic truth that "reality is not optional", and the fact that you're trying to solve a problem, what would you rather have, a meaningful answer from someone who is curt and possibly even "not nice" (probably because, you're the 32nd person this week who didn't bother to do their homework, and seems to feels that the answer should be delivered on a silver platter and spoon fed to them, and the attitude has become annoying), or a useless answer that's all sweetness and light?

From a touchie-feelie perspective, this is actually an amazingly friendly and helpful group. Rude responses usually result from bad manners on the part of a newbie or someone who should know better. Just like travelling in a foreign land, it pays to know the local manners if you want to avoid problems. When you don't do your own research first you're being rude and insulting on several levels.
    - Asking FAQs and off topic posting is a form of littering
    - Demanding "personal service" carries the implication that our time isn't worth anything compared to yours. Just because we're "giving it away" pro bono doen't make the time worthless.
    - We're investing that time in a community. That means that people acting like game theory "defectors" need to be discouraged lest they destroy it.
    - Failing to use the documentation resources provided through the personal efforts of people like Cecil, Xsecrets, ... insults their work and wastes their efforts.
    - ...

Pointed responses usually indicate that you've failed to grasp the clue that someone just put in your hand and possibly even wrapped your fingers around and they think that a sharp nudge is needed to get through to you. Embarassment is often a wonderful spur to memory or attention. When I'm teaching, training, or mentoring it's usually reserved as a technique of last resort for people who think they can "phone it in" or "skate". Some people seem to need a bigger dose than others to get the point....
