Post subject: | Looking for Hardware Recommendations |
I am getting ready to build my own computer specifically for KnoppMyth and I am looking for some specific hardware recommendations. I would like to build it with small, quiet components that are easy to use with Myth TV/Linux. Also, the cheaper the better. Here is what I am considering, please let me know what you consider the best hardware for the job. Motherboard: ? Definitely need recommendation (VIA EPIA M10000?) Processor: Intel or AMD 2.4Ghz+ Memory: 512 Hard Drive: 100+ GB Sound Card: Do I need a separate sound card? If so, any recommendations? Video Card: Do I need separate Video Card? If so, any recommendations? TV Card: Hauppauge 150/250/350 DVD Burner: What is a good linux compatible DVD Burner? Am I missing anything? Any recommendations on where to buy the components? Thanks for the help ahead of time. |

[...] Processor: Intel or AMD 2.4Ghz+ [...] TV Card: Hauppauge 150/250/350 If you want cheap and quiet, I'd go with AMD. The 2.4Ghz intel chips are notoriously hot, which means you need better cooling, which means more fans, which means more noise. And they cost more. I have had good luck with the audio straight out of my motherboard, it is more than adequate. I would get the biggest hard drive you can possibly find and afford. The 150-PVR is a bit of a dodgy card with Linux right now from what I read, stick with the 250 or 350. A newer Nvidia video card (Geforce 4 series or better) with TV-out is the easiest to setup. And don't forget the network card, don't install it without one unless you want more trouble later on. Most hardware works fine with Linux, but search around to make sure before buying anything. |
