Post subject: | Modem Woes |
To all the Linux gurus out there this poor linux newbie is humbly requesting assistance. I have recently assembled a PVR and have been able to set it up thanks in large part to all the great posts on this forum. Before I can declare the project finished I need to be able to download program guides from Zap2It. This is where my project has ground to a halt. So far I have been unable to setup a modem for this system. The modem is a Hummingbird PCI 56K/V.92 that supports Linux (Smartlink Smart PCI562). I have been unable to install any driver for this modem. I have tried using a fresh install of kudzu and installing the drivers that came with the modem. All to no avail. The makefile that came with the modem fails because it can't find modversions.h and kudzu didn't appear to do anything. At this point any help would be appreciated. This is my first Linux load so I am learning as I go. |

ok you jumped way ahead of yourself here as in wtf does kudzu have to do with knoppmyth? kudzu is the redhat hardware detection utility, and that I know of knoppmyth does not use it. Maybe a little more info like why on earth you thought you needed kudzu. |

Like I said, I'm a newbie. I didn't know better. I was following the directions posted by gr8nash in the usage/howto forum: knoppmyth dial-out HOWTO. I was able to download the kudzu package from the Debian site, so I thought it was OK. If there is a better plug & play hardware installer, let me know. |

well I haven't looked at that howto, I guess you can use the kudzu package I knew they ported it to debian, but didn't realize that it would in any way be needed for simple modem access. If you were following a thread and had a problem with some part of it the proper place to post would have been in that thread telling where you got what step you had a problem with and what the error you were having was, would have given us much more to go on. |

I do believe if you search the forum, someone has written a howto on getting a modem working... |

Actually, I have searched the forum and the web and was following one of the How-To’s that was posted ( knoppmyth dial-out HOWTO) but that hasn’t been working. My problem appears to be quite nasty and that is why I started this thread. I have done a little more digging and it appears that for some reason my modem is not being recognized at the lowest level. I can run lspci and it returns the port and IRQ and shows that the HW is physically in the computer. I then run the setserial and try to assign it to ttyS0 – ttyS3. In the end only one appears to take the setting. Next, I run wvdialconf but it doesn’t find the modem on any of the ports. This is all after installing the drivers for the modem. I have checked and the modem is linux compatible. So at this point I am at a complete loss and need some expert help. If I can’t manage to get the modem working I have just built an expensive VCR. Many of the great features of a DVR hinge on being able to download the program guide, which I can’t do without a modem. So any help will be greatly appreciated. |

Man, I have not used a modem (telephone) in years... I still remember my first 75/300 buad from Radio Shack. But I digress... Ensure the modem is well seated. If you're not using onboard serial ports disable them (in BIOS) to ensure there isn't a conflict. |
