Post subject: | What a suprise, a sound issue (PVR250) |
I've been hesitate to post this issue because I figured I could find the answer on my own. Seeing as I have had no luck, here goes... --No sound from inside mythtv-- My setup consists of R5A16 on a Dell Precision 610 with dual PIII Xeon 550mhz, 1 gig of ecc sdram, turtle beach montego with the vortex 2 chipset, and the Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-250 (Model 980) [also, three striped 73gig Seagate scsi 10k drives]. I have been using Linux for a while but always in a server capacity so I have little experience with sound and GUI Linux applications. Through my searching I found the standard reply to "use the alsamixer to capture/mute 'line'" and all that, which i have done, but I'm still getting no sound inside mythtv. If I switch to console, I can use mplayer to play the random .wav files scattered throughout the system. The sound card is recognized properly by the system and the proper driver is loaded by the kernel, same with the tuner. I've recompiled the kernel several times with various configurations with no change so I don't think its a kernel issue. The mythtv documentation mentions a file called 'asoundrc' used in some way to configure alsa but my system doesn't contain this file. Also the docs mention the module, 'msp3400.o', if this is part of the issue, I can't quite figure out what if i have the correct version it speaks of or not. Anyway, i can post any log data anyone would like to see...I'm getting sick of watching tv with no sound;) Thanks for any info (sorry for any spelling errors i tried to do this quick) |

First thing I suggest is to run alsaconf (run it as root). |

There is no need to run alsaconf as his sound card works (according to his post).Does MythTV complain about not being able to open a DSP? Is the sound turned up (from within MythTV)? |

mythtv says nothing about the dsp, if i change the audio device to something that doesnt exist, for instance /dev/dsp4, and then go to watch tv, it asks if i want to continue without audio, but if i use /dev/dsp it just brings up the cable signal and it works like it should minus the audio. As for the volume levels, they were set at about 80% so i don't think that is the issue. Any other ideas...i hate having to ask for help with seemingly simple problems...thanks |

Use a mixer to make sure that pcm and master aren't muted... For me alsamixer shows master and center (muted?) at 100% and the pcm (which is the actual control point) at 81%. Also IEC958 (no muting associated) at 100% and external (no volume associated) unmuted... |

i messed around with muting and unmuting all the above 'devices' with still no luck...and i can still play audio with mplayer what sort of mixer device should mythtv be pointing at, /dev/mixer? secondly, when i use alsamixer -V all i have something listed called 'capture' that has volume associated with it i have it unmuted and turned most of the way up, seems strange to me to have a device called capture and also be capturing from the line in... |
