Help,
I'm installing KnoppMyth R5A16 (Aug 3, 2005) in Melbourne Australia.

HW is
Athlon 3000+, Gigabyte K8N (nForce 4), 1GB, 200GB IDE(ATA), NVidia 6600GT

TV card Fusion HDTV DVB-T Plus

Everything installs swimmingly, the card is recognised, images show on the tv and monitor. All is ok until I try to obtain / tune channels.

Have tried creating a Transport entry (actually tried various combinations of 1-10 transport definitions), but cannot get the card to scan.
Interestingly, the scan process does show signal strength >0 for some transport definitions (up to 69% for SBS on 536.5MHz = 536500000), but always fails with message "Error tuning to transport" - no matter what combination I try

Have tried using dvbscan utility but really don't understand it so results seem low value

I am an absolute Linux n00b so am baffled by the editor even (never mind being able to find my way around directory structures).

Any advice / help would be much appreciated

Dude, just a friendly warning but posting the same (off topic because it's) post-install configuration problem to both installation forums is considered really, really bad form. Cecil gets downright grumpy about stuff like this...

As a result most of us won't bother to respond because it's a waste of time given this rather unambiguous sticky "read me" posting: http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3195

Thanks for the advice.
Aftre posting the first I realised I'd probably posted in the wrong place, then didn't know how to remove the original.

It wouldn't surprise me to discover I still have it wrong.

Oh well, a learning experience :?

Until someone else posts after you there is usually an X in the upper right hand corner of your post (after the quote and edit buttons) which will let you delete it.

Is that a DVICO Fusion DVB-Full card? The low profile one? If so, I think you need a 2.6.12 kernel. If it is a DVICO DVB-T1 card, the 2.6.13-rc4 kernel should work.

Unfortunately either way, with the current release I think you will need to rebuild the kernel. There are plenty of posts how to do that.

Help

I've installed the new kernel (2.6.12.3) starting with Greg's instructions & script (hacked around abit), but still can't tune any channels. Note that I had to install from a fully functional KnoppMyth R5A16 install(cause I couldn't work out how to do anything else - tried USB key access without any luck)
Quite an adventure for a noob, finding the source, figuring out how to edit, find things, update files, make a new config etc. etc.
Anyway done now, have Lilo set for alternate boot so can boot old or new kernel.

Have tried creating channel entries manually (using data from DBA) - still no joy.

Do I need a module entry ? Something about the kernelconfig ? Something else I'm missing ?

Any help gratefully received :?

How did you configure the kernel that you built?

I grabbed cesman's .config from the /boot directory of R5A16 and in addition selected the following additional option:
Device Drivers->Multimedia Devices->Video for Linux->DVB Support for CX2388x Based TV Cards

What is the output of dmesg (The part where it loads the driver for your card)?

A post on this page indicates the plus card works with 2.6.12:
http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic. ... c&start=15

The next page in the thread suggests that you need to do a "modprobe dvb-bt8xx"

(and add dvb-bt8xx into /etc/modules for next reboot)
http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic. ... c&start=30

Have you done this. You can check if the dvb-bt8xx module is loaded by using the lsmod command.

Thanks for responding so quickly Greg

I configured the new kernel by using the MAKE OLDCONFIG command, then updating the new parms (only). Have tried using MAKE XCONFIG but doesn't seem to work for me

I don't know how to paste the relevant DMESG output (this is on the Linux System, and can't get samba going to access from an alternate, tho I have the dmesg output in a file which I can view from Firefox, I'm very new at this) -

cx2388x dvb driver version 0.0.4 loaded
cx88[0] subsystem: 18ac:db10, board: DVICO FusionHDTV DVB-Plus [Card=21 autodetected]

Then a whole lot of stuff about registering the adapter, allocated to IRQ 19, some stuff about "dvb registering new adapter" etc. etc.

I tried the modprobe - but the command wasn't found and I couldn't find a directory to execute it from.

I added a line to the end of the MODULES file -
dvb-bt8xx

Not sure about the modules change (have rebooted since - to no effect). Is this an ivtv card ? There are no entries in the

/etc/mythtv/modules/bttv0

files,
but there are entries in the

/etc/mythtv/modules/ivtv

files.

Thanks for your help

Hmm, just ran modprobe successfully this time ??
Then ran lsmod | more, confirmed that dvb-bt8xx is loaded (used-by shows 0, tho other modules show they are used by dvb-bt8xx)

Note that I had previously rebooted after adding the dvb-bt8xx line to the modules file.

Have re-tried the mythtv-setup, just in case, but still no joy

Just got back from the footy. Go the CROWS. What exactly do you mean by "still no joy". No it's not an ivtv card. Try "make menuconfig" from the kernel directory and look for the option I mentioned previously. modprobe probably didn't work for you the first time because you were the mythtv user and it probably worked the second time because you were the root user (so the command was in your path).

If it already said "cx88[0] subsystem: 18ac:db10, board: DVICO FusionHDTV DVB-Plus [Card=21 autodetected]" before modprobing or adding stuff to /etc/modules, you probably didn't need to.

If you want to get the dmesg output onto a USB memory stick, you can probably mount the memory stick using "mount /dev/sda1 /mnt" as the root user and then "dmesg > /mnt/dmesg_output.txt" and then "umount /mnt" before removing the USB stick.

Crows ? Who are the Crows? Have only heard of the Saints ...... who are finally starting to win a few games. We may meet in the finals !

Back to more mundane matters. Have recompiled the kernel many times, trying 2.6.12.3 and 2.6.12.4. Neither seems to work.
Have set the .CONFIG options (verified) and checked after reboot with MODPROBE -L, here's the output -

I also checked the DEMSG output for 'FAIL' and find 2 minor entries -

nvidiafb: Using CRT on CRTC 0

isapnp: Scanning for PnP cards...
=======================================================================
but they seem failry innocuous (to my eyes), since the video all works ok.

All seems ok in MythTv until i try to scan channels. Have set up a transport, with ABC Melbourne at 735500000 (all other parms set to AUTO), but autoscan fails with
"Error tuning to transport"
message, no matter what I do. interstingly, the display shows -
1 Signal strength at 99%. And this figure blinks (blue and white alternately)
2 Scan % at 0

Have tried -
o manually defining channels
o defining multiple transports (and associated channels)
o scanning one transport/channel at a time
o scanning all transports/channels
o define a sinle transport (ABC) and setting the channel parms in the screen prior to the autoscan.

Nothing seems to work. I can't see any messages to indicate why it's not working, other than the transport error.

Can anyone point me to a DVBSCAN setup file. If I could work out what the file shoudl like like and where to place it, I'll try one of those.

Thanks for yoru help

I had problems getting my DVICO card to scan when only entering the frequency. Try specifying the bandwidth as well. An example of a dvbscan setup file is shown below. You should be able to lookup the frequencies for your area on http://www.dba.org.au
Code:
# Australia / Adelaide / Foothills
# T freq bw fec_hi fec_lo mod transmission-mode guard-interval hierarchy
# ABC
T 781625000 7MHz 3/4 NONE QAM64 8k 1/16 NONE
# Seven
T 732500000 7MHz 2/3 NONE QAM64 8k 1/8 NONE
# Nine
T 795500000 7MHz 3/4 NONE QAM64 8k 1/16 NONE
# Ten
T 711500000 7MHz 3/4 NONE QAM64 8k 1/16 NONE
# SBS
T 760625000 7MHz 2/3 NONE QAM64 8k 1/8 NONE

AHA

That's it. Need to use the Dandenong transmitter, then it works (DVBA lists 2 transmitters, I had assumed the closer one - South Yarra - would work, but it doesn't).
DVBSCAN was the breakthrough

Now all but SBS tuned in (which is odd, since SBS is available on the same card in WinDoze).

Fantastic.

Thanks very much for all your help.

Now I will try installing the remote control stuff (later, will watch some tv first).

BTW, the tv quality is fantastic - much better than using the windows software. The GT6600 card works without any special tweeks (did specify TV at initial boot/load when installing, and had already used windows utilities to set the card up for tv out) - using the component video out via dongle.

Woohoo.

Here's the DVBSCAN file for Melbourne Dandenong transmitter -
Code:
# Australia / Melbourne / Bayside (Dandenong transmitter)
# T freq bw fec_hi fec_lo mod transmission-mode guard-interval hierarchy
# ABC
T 226500000 7MHz 3/4 NONE QAM64 8k 1/16 NONE
# Seven
T 177500000 7MHz 2/3 NONE QAM64 8k 1/8 NONE
# Nine
T 191625000 7MHz 3/4 NONE QAM64 8k 1/16 NONE
# Ten
T 219500000 7MHz 3/4 NONE QAM64 8k 1/16 NONE
# SBS
T 536500000 7MHz 2/3 NONE QAM64 8k 1/8 NONE

Glad to have been of assistance :D

Just a word of warning, the dba site sometimes has the wrong frequencies. In my case, the frequency for ABC was wrong (I got the correct frequency from the ABC web site). This may be your problem with SBS (but it could just as easily be something else). Also double check your frequency. I could have sworn I had double checked my channel 10 freq when I started, and it took me ages to see that I had transposed two digits.
