Hi All. I've been searching through the Forums for a few days now, also the ivtv wiki, nothing has worked yet. I took a good look at the discussion with wbalradio from a few days ago. Also googled the bejeezus out of "PVR-250 980 snow static".
I can view unencoded DVDs (I understand you have to install the "css patch" for encoded DVDs, have not got to that yet) but see nothing but static/snow on my PVR-250 when I 'watch tv'. I can see the channel overlays just fine, but with a snowstorm behind the overlay on all channels.
Keep in mind that I am a Linux newbie/cluebag. My skill set thus far includes (a) booting from Knoppix, (b) using apt-get to install Firefox (it worked!), and (c) using Xedit (as root) to try and tweak ivtv configuration files. I don't know where many of the config files listed in the forums here are located and could use a nice forceful shove in the right direction.
Here is my setup:
=================
Knoppmyth R5A16 (I think ivtv 0.2.0 is a part of this, according to changelog)
MSI Neo2 (Nvidia3 chipset) motherboard
Onboard Ethernet (works great)
Onboard Sound (analog outputs work fine, not equipped to test digital yet)
GeForce 5200
Hauppauge PVR-250 model 980 (32062 REV C199) with (non-working) silver/gray remote
AMD Athlon 64
512Meg Ram
IDE hard drive
Stuff I have tried so far:
Knoppix:
----------
Had to go into Knoppix expert mode and bypass SCSI detection for AIC7xxxx.o and ultrastor.o
Chose screen=800x600
Chose graphics card=nv5200
Chose graphics driver=nv
Chose to Write these values to XF-config-4 file
- I DID NOT go in and manually install nvidia drivers from root console later on. Tried this once and it failed/ignored the command.
Knoppmyth:
---------
Auto Install
Used 586 modules (default)
Also tried 686 modules (no difference noticeable)
Toggled between Us-BCST, US-CABLE, and US-CABLE-HRC in mythtv-setup
Verified output to "Tuner0"
Hardware:
----------
Removed the PVR-250 model 980 card (32062 REV C199) and moved it to a different PCI slot. Seems to be a more secure fit, but noticed no difference in performance.
Tried to feed S-video into the PVR-250 using my camcorder, could not see video when I chose "S-video0" as mythtv source (did not try other S-vid sources).
Software:
----------
Based on readings in this forum, I used xedit and changed /etc/mythtv/modules/ivtv. I changed "tuner type" to -1, 39, 2, 82, 83 with no joy.
Based on reading ivtv wiki, I tried to install ivtv 0.3.x ("ivtv-unstable"), using the instructions listed at < http://ivtv.writeme.ch/tiki-index.php?page=DebianHowTo>. I got a download error stating "errors in processing locales" and the ivtv module-assistant would not complete the menu of tasks after I tried starting it. Tried the tv tuner again, with no joy. Fearful I had corrupted my system, I did a brute force cleanup by re-installing Knoppmyth.
Not sure where to go from here. Where do I find this 'dmesg ivtv' file that people have been listing here? This looks like the 'Captain Crunch Decoder Ring' to decipher what ivtv is seeing from my TV card.
Thanks in advance for your help!

dmesg is a command it list the system logs or at least some of them. what you would want to run to get what people post is
dmesg | grep ivtv
this runs dmesg then only pulls out and displays any line with ivtv in it.
however I can pretty much guarantee you that if you have a pvr250 model 980 you will have to update ivtv. the instructions on the pvr150 page in the wiki are a pretty good guide of how to upgrade the ivtv drivers even though you are not running a 150 the process of upgrading ivtv is pretty much the same.

I have the same 250 version as stated above (32062 REV C199), and I peeled back the sticker and found a TCL-2002N tuner. (The ivtv tuner.h file says this is tuner type 50.) I also can't seem to get it to work, same sympoms as ewills (snow). I have tried updating to the latest ivtv, and have tried tuner types 50 & 39.
More details of my log files are at my post here:
http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=5622
ivtv is not detecting the tuner type.
Is it possible that ivtv just doesn't support the tuner that we have in the current version of the driver?
My setup: R5A16, PVR-250, nVidia FX5200.
Thanks.

I use both types of pvr-250's in mine.. I think I ended up using an
"options ivtv tuner=39,39"
Modify /etc/mythtv/modules/ivtv and add this line:
options ivtv tuner=39,39
This is for 2 tuners so just change yours to:
options ivtv tuner=39
Reboot!
One more thing. In mythtv-setup make sure you configure a channel lineup from zap2it and assign that lineup to you tuner=television choice.
You also have to have a successful mythfilldatabase.

I looked at my config. for both the 250's they should auto detect.
You might have to try a different pci slot.

Like I said try a differnet slot first..
THen try tuner type 2 or 39 THat is what mine detect.
change
/etc/mythtv/modules/ivtv
and add
options ivtv tuner=2
if that don't work try tuner 39

This little sed pipeline is a bit better at grabbing the whole chunk (it includes the critical tveeprom info related to auto-detection) if also slightly harder to remember...
Code: cat /var/log/dmesg | sed -n '/= START INIT IVTV =/,/= END INIT IVTV =/p' | more

More than "possible", I'd say "very likely". Our friends at Hauppauge have been pretty helpful to the driver and mythtv development folks, but they change tuner types at such a dizzying pace that it's still hard for the developers to keep up.
More research on the IVTV mailing lists, forums and wiki is probably indicated... Of course you may also have a bad card, we hear a report of that every couple months...

THANKS XSECRETS !! I did the "HauppaugeOneFiftyInstallation" from KnoppMythWiki instructions verbatim, with the exception of:
- downloaded latest ivtv driver (0.3.7d)
- commenting out "#add above ivtv lirc_dev lirc_i2c" in /etc/modprobe.d/ivtv
- commenting out "#options tuner=2" line in /etc/mythtv/modules/ivtv
MY PVR-250 TUNER IS NOW ROCKIN' LIKE DOKKEN!!

ewills: Can you tell me if your 250 tuner is being auto-detected in /var/log/messages (using tjc's sed script)?
I updated ivtv to 0.3.7d, same as you, and mine is still not detected. I get:
Code: Aug 11 16:09:59 mythtv kernel: tveeprom: tuner = <unknown> (idx = 99, type = 0)
If yours is also not auto-detected, maybe I have something else wrong in a config file such as ivtv.
Thanks,
Mike

Thanks, Mike Mike - I will try to get to this tonite. I'm a newbie/cluebag... what's this sed script? Do I type the following in terminal (as root)? Code: cat /var/log/dmesg | sed -n '/= START INIT IVTV =/,/= END INIT IVTV =/p' | more

I ended up finally getting the tuner working last night. I found that I had to add this line to the ivtv config file:
Code: options ivtv tuner=39,50 ivtv_std=1,1 tda9887=0 The sed script is the one listed above in tjc's reply, namely: Code: cat /var/log/dmesg | sed -n '/= START INIT IVTV =/,/= END INIT IVTV =/p' | more You could openan xterm window, save it to a text file using the nano editor, for example, and then make it executable by Code: chmod 777 sed-filename
I am curious because I have seen others showing that their TCL tuner was in fact auto-detected but mine was not. Anyway, it is working now.
I plan to do a little write-up for others with this new tuner in the Problems and Solutions area of the forum.
Thanks again to tjc and others for all of their help!
(I am now working on getting my remote to work, but that is the subject of a different post!)

Do NOT do this. Even suggesting this can inspre me to a 2 page rant. It's the, "the windows in my BMW were dirty so I blew them out with 5 rounds from a 10 gauge shotgun" approach. A bottle of Windex and a roll of paper towels or even a hose and a sponge would be far more effective and have far fewer negative consequences. If you want to make a script executable then make it executable using something like Code: chmod +x myscript.sh msfox99 wrote: (I am now working on getting my remote to work, but that is the subject of a different post!) Run: Code: update-rc.d lirc defaults
and then reboot the machine. It doesn't like to work right away for some reason.

Hi, I am trying to set up a KnoppMyth PVR for a friend at work and am having very similar problems... all I get is snow no matter what I try. I have tried tuner=2, tuner=39, tuner=50, all with no luck. My friend just purchased this PVR-250 from newegg.com and I suspect that a new tuner chip has been introduced that is not supported. Can anyone help me or tell me what I am doing wrong, please? The PVR-250 is a model=32062, rev=C199, serial#=8115518 When I peel back the sticker on the tuner, I see TCL2002N-5H 2K4 004 a quick search of the forum indicates this is the "tuner=50" I have updated the ivtv as per instructions ( except to use the very latest ivtv 0.3.8 ) on the knoppmythwiki for the PVR-150 update.
