Post subject:  bttv emu10K1 video and audio stutters

Believe me when I say that I have searched message board after message board before posting here. I know how much of a pain it is to answer the same questions all the time, so I make sure I exhaust my patience before troubling others. I have been working on this problem for two weeks, searching, reading, re-installing and picking things apart. It’s likely I’ve driven my work associates mad trying to find a solution to this problem, but they haven’t killed me yet. ;-)

Hardware list first. My Hardware on the Database

Matsonic MS8308EP (266) Motherboard
AMD Athlon XP 2000+
512 Megs PC133 Ram
GeForce MX4000 64MB Video Card
Hauppauge WinTV-GO Plus (grey remote included)
40 GB Boot Drive (took the 300 GB data drive offline till I could figure this out)
Yamaha DS-GX (YMF724F) Sound Card 1
Soundblaster PCI 512 (EMU10K1) Sound Card 2
Soundblaster Live 5.1 (EMU10K1) Sound Card 3
Soundblaster Audigy Gamer (EMU10K2) Sound Card 4
Onboard Matsonic SIS Sound Card (Generic) Sound Card 5

Here is what I’m encountering. If I use the Yamaha or onboard SIS sound card, everything on KnoppMyth runs perfectly except for the quality of the sound. I get very thin sound (imagine removing most of the low end) and a high pitched whine (like a monitor gone bad) from the speakers, but the Live TV and recording is perfectly smooth and fine, video is synchronized with audio.

If I use any of the Soundblaster cards, I can get video and audio to sync perfectly and I get nice rich, thick sound, but after a minute the audio stutters and video turns choppy. This starts nearly immediately after starting live TV or watching anything recorded from TV. Playing a DVD is perfect though. Every couple of minutes the video and audio just pause to catch up, then the stuttering starts again.

I have checked that my hard drive is using DMA. As I said, I don’t get any audio/video stutter unless I use a Soundblaster EMU10K based card. Running the Yamaha or SIS card means smooth audio and video, but it starts the dogs barking.

I know that you hate to answer the same stupid questions, and maybe I’m not forming my search queries correctly, but I just can’t seem to find an answer after 2 weeks of Google, KnoppMyth forums, Wiki searching and general MythTV forums. If anyone can point me to the right direction, or give me a hint on where to look, I’d be very grateful.

UPDATE 9/17/2005 21:15 UTC: No fix on the old setup. So I tried an ASUS A7V8X-X Motherboard and used the onboard sound. Video is smooth, audio is smooth, and the "whine" is very minimal (you really have to concentrate to hear it). So, toss the Soundblaster PCI 512, Live 5.1 and Audigy Gamer, they all would give audio and video stutters no matter what my setup.
