I've been battling this for a few days and can't find a clear answer with searchs done.

I am using R5A16 with a PVR-250 (tuner 39) card and want to use the included remote (Grey)

The stock LIRC is 0.7.1pre2, which returns the correct DMESG values on boot:
lirc_dev: IR Remote Control driver registered, at major 61
lirc_i2c: chip found @ 0x18 (Hauppauge IR)
lirc_dev: lirc_register_plugin:sample_rate: 10

IRRECORD works and 'sees' the remote, but does not work in MythTV.

So one of the searches finds I have to 'downgrade' to 0.7.0, which I do following the thread instructions, however, when I reboot the DMESG only contains the first line:
lirc_dev: IR Remote Control driver registered, at major 61
and IRRECORD does not work

this is very frustrating!

so which direction should I be heading to get the Grey remote to work with R5A16? I find that the forum search is just leading me in circles..

the good news is the tuner works out of the box -- last year when I had another version of Knoppmyth running the remote worked great, but the TV tuner wouldn't (I did finally get it)

Any advice would be appreciated, at this point, I'm back to stock 0.7.1pre2

if you had an older version that worked with the remote you have then you should not have to do anything to get the remote working. it should work "out of the box" you might at the most need to run the update-rc.d lirc defaults command.

I do that and get this:

System startup links for /etc/init.d/lirc already exist.

do you mean when I've downgraded or "out of the box"?

The bright side is that the Remote Wonder is supposedly working great - so I might get that one eventually...

the hauppage "grey" remote works out of the box without doing anything at all whatsoever other than a standard install. this is not the "silver" remote. At this point only the old hauppage remote works "out of the box", but work is being done to accommodate more remotes.

This is what's confusing, the colours...
black, grey, silver

to me mine looks silver, but is not peanut shaped like the new silver one...

it used to work in last year's Knoppmyth, but not this most recent version..

my setup from last year was sold, but I built an almost identical system recently...

another clue:

I do irw to test, no output

if I do:

# rmmod lirc_i2c
# modprobe lirc_i2c
# lircd
# irw

I get output, in root and user modes

I might just kludge those three lines somewhere to get this going...

I finally fixed the remote:

I did:

apt-get remove lirc

I then installed lirc per this thread:

and then tweaked the installation per this thread, ignoring the peanut remote specific stuff...
