Post subject:  Recommend me a digital-t card (To recieve UK Freeview)

Hi everybody,

I've posted twice before now trying out some possible ideas for a tvcard but without much luck.

I am wanting want to build a Myth TV standalone media centre to play DVD's, watch the freeview, to record a programme and that 'pause live tv' thing: basically get rid of the mismatched bits of hardwear that currently sit beneath my TV and replace them with a single box.
Plus, VHS is soooooo old fashioned.

I've so far got most of the pieces, admittedly some are left overs from a few years ago, some not so old.

My proposed rig is:
Athlon 1.4
Asus A7V880 mobo
512mb pc2700 ram
GeForce G4 ti4600
Soundblaster live 5.1
40gb hdd (I'll be getting a bigger one soon)

All i need to get now is the tv card.

Suggestions please!

Thanks in advance
-Chris :)

ps. I want to have a remote control. If a card came with one that'd be a bonus... if not any ideas on a good one to get?

I just bought a Hauppage WinTv Nova-T. Needed a bit of pratting around to get it working but I managed it in a day (and I'm no linux guru).

The other popular card is the Avermedia 771 which I have never used.

One other note. If you are going to put this in your lounge to replace all the crap under your tv you may want to consider getting a 'sexy' case.... which will require a small motherboard to go in it. Your next problem is how loud you want something to be in your lounge.

Fans are a problem and also a 2.5" hard drive is a lot quieter than a standard 3.5".

Hi parkinpants,

The Nova-t card was one I was considering. Looks like the way forward.

My road map to media center happiness runs a bit like as I saw in someonelse's post:
Phase 1 is to build the system. Phase 2 is addict partner to this, then Phase 3 is upgrade. At this point I'll build one that's smaller and whisper quiet using SFF stuff and hopefully the girlfriends wont object to me spending more money on 'computer bits' at this point.

Atm I've an old case which I'm going to respray. Not too bad looking from the front, so it'll do for now. Bit of modding perhaps to ass an akasa 120mm ambersilent fan to the top: jobs a goodun.

As it stands the hdd I have is quiet. Quieter by far than the sata drive I have in my everyday/gaming pc. I'm thinking it should run pretty quiet, but we will see. Next weekend I build. Today I order the tv card.

Thanks for the advice. Cheers

Avoid the 350 if you want to use TV out. I've had nothing but troubles with it.

also avoid the 350 because it is not a digital terrestial card

I also couldn't get it to work, never mind tv-out

Also: Parkinpants, I read through your Nova-T installation guide. Cheers for that one. I will be following it closely shortly!
